1) Can I use the Crouse-Hinds XDT transformer in a Class I Division 1 area?
No. The XDT Series is rated Class I, Division 2 only, meaning areas where flammable gases or vapors are present only under abnormal conditions. For a Division 1 location, where ignitable concentrations exist under normal operation, you need equipment specifically listed for Division 1. Putting a Division 2 unit in a Division 1 area will not pass inspection.
2) Which kVA sizes does the Crouse-Hinds XDT3B three-phase transformer come in?
Seven sizes across the XDT3B line: 6, 9, 15, 30, 45 and 75 kVA. In painted steel with a NEMA 3R enclosure you can get 6 (XDT3B6), 9 (XDT3B9), 15 (XDT3B15), 30 (XDT3B30), 45 (XDT3B45) and 75 kVA (XDT3B75). The 316 stainless steel NEMA 4X version is offered in 6 (XDT3B6X), 15 (XDT3B15X), 30 (XDT3B30X) and 45 kVA (XDT3B45X), so if you need stainless at 9 or 75 kVA, that combination is not built.
3) Should I order the painted steel or the 316 stainless XDT transformer for an outdoor refinery installation?
Both enclosure styles are outdoor-capable, but they solve different problems. Painted steel is NEMA 3R, which handles rain, sleet and snow, and suits a sheltered or inland outdoor pad. The 316 stainless version (the X suffix, such as XDT3B30X) is NEMA 4X, adding washdown and corrosion resistance, which is what you want in a refinery, coastal site, chemical processing area or anywhere the unit gets hosed down or sees salt and chemical mist.
4) Will the Crouse-Hinds XDT transformer give me 120V for receptacles and lighting off a 480V feed?
Yes. The XDT3B is a 480 Vac primary to 208Y/120 Vac secondary three-phase transformer, so the wye secondary gives you 208V phase-to-phase for three-phase loads and 120V phase-to-neutral for receptacles, lighting and control circuits off the same unit. Rated for 60 Hz.
5) What does resin encapsulated mean on a hazardous location dry-type transformer, and does it need cooling oil?
Resin encapsulation means the windings are cast in resin rather than immersed in liquid, so there is no oil to fill, sample or contain, and no liquid containment requirement at the pad. The resin seals the copper windings against moisture and airborne contaminants, which is why this construction gets used in grain handling, paint plants and pharmaceutical production where dust and vapor are part of the environment.
6) Does the Crouse-Hinds XDT transformer meet Canadian Electrical Code as well as NEC?
The XDT Series is built to NEC/CEC standards, so it can be specified on both US and Canadian projects. That matters for cross-border industrial work where one transformer spec has to satisfy both the National Electrical Code and the Canadian Electrical Code for a classified location.

Three-phase. The XDT3B is a three-phase unit with a 480 Vac delta-side input and a 208Y/120 Vac wye output, so it needs a three-phase 480V feeder. If your only source is single-phase 480V, this is not the right transformer, even though the wye secondary does provide single-phase 120V branch circuits.
