1) Which sensing modes does the Eaton E51 photoelectric sensor head come in, and which should I pick?
Two sensing modes are offered. The E51DP3 is diffuse reflective, meaning the emitter and receiver are in one head and the beam bounces off the target itself, so you only mount and wire one device. The E51DP5, E51DP6 and E51NLP22 are through-beam, which uses a separate emitter and receiver facing each other so the object breaks the beam. Diffuse is the simpler install when you can only get to one side of the conveyor or opening. Through-beam is what you want for longer distances or for dark, shiny or irregular targets that reflect poorly.
2) Can the Eaton E51 sensor be used in a washdown area?
Yes. The E51 Series carries an IP67 rating along with NEMA 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13, which covers hosedown and harsh duty. The 4X rating is the one that matters in food and beverage plants where corrosive cleaners are used. The head enclosure is plastic, so it is corrosion resistant rather than a painted metal body that can chip.
3) How does the Eaton E51 sensor wire in, and do I need a cordset?
Wiring is by screw terminal directly at the sensor, not a quick-disconnect plug, so you land conductors in the field and can re-terminate during service without ordering a mating cordset. Budget for a cable gland or conduit fitting at the sensor location.
4) Will the Eaton E51 sensor hold up in a freezer aisle or a hot process area?
Operating range is -13 degrees F to 158 degrees F. That covers most cold storage staging areas and typical hot packaging or shrink-tunnel adjacency, but it is not rated for the inside of a blast freezer or a direct oven zone.
5) Can I aim the Eaton E51 sensor head without remounting the bracket?
The head rotates to any of four positions on the body, 90 degrees apart, without separating from the body. That lets you turn the beam toward the target after the bracket is already bolted down, which saves a re-drill when a conveyor guard or frame member gets in the way.
