Eaton ECC225S – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Eaton ECC circuit breaker enclosure come with a breaker in it?
No. The ECC Series is an empty enclosure only, and the CC frame breaker is ordered separately. Plan the order as two lines: the enclosure in the amperage, NEMA rating and mounting you need, plus the CCV frame type breaker that goes inside it. A factory-installed ground lug is already in the box, so grounding hardware is not a separate buy.
2) Can the Eaton ECC enclosure be mounted outside?
Only the NEMA 3R outdoor rainproof versions are for exterior use. Those are the ECC225R at 225A and the ECCVH100R, ECCVH150R and ECCVH200R at 100A, 150A and 200A. The NEMA 1 versions, ECC225F and ECC225S, are indoor only and should not be hung on an exterior wall or anywhere weather reaches them.
3) What is the difference between the flush and surface mount ECC enclosures?
Flush (ECC225F) sets into the wall so the trim finishes level with the finished surface, which is what you want in a public corridor or a finished tenant space where the wall is being opened up anyway. Surface (ECC225S) bolts onto the face of the wall and is the normal choice in a mechanical room, back of house, or any retrofit where you are not cutting into existing construction. Both are NEMA 1 indoor. The outdoor NEMA 3R units are standard mount, so if the enclosure is going outside, flush is not an option.
4) Will an ECC enclosure accept any Eaton breaker, or only certain frames?
CCV frame only. The ECC Series is a dedicated housing for CC series breakers, so a breaker from a different Eaton frame will not land in it correctly. Confirm the frame designation on the breaker you already own or are specifying reads CC before pairing it with an ECC can.
5) Is 225V enough for a 208Y/120 or 240V panel feed?
The ECC enclosure carries a 225V rating, which covers standard commercial single and three phase systems at or below that, including 208Y/120 and 240V. It is not a 480V enclosure. If the feeder is 480Y/277, the ECC line is the wrong choice and you need a higher voltage rated frame.
6) Does the Eaton ECC enclosure have a fault current rating my inspector will accept?
It is rated 10 kAIC and UL Listed. That interrupting rating has to equal or beat the available fault current at the point of installation, which on a service close to a large utility transformer can exceed 10 kA. Pull the available fault current from the engineer's study or the utility before committing.
7) What is the Square D equivalent to an Eaton ECC circuit breaker enclosure for an indoor breaker install?
For an indoor NEMA 1 breaker enclosure, the Square D PowerPacT B Series steel circuit breaker enclosure is the Square D counterpart. The Eaton ECC enclosure covers indoor NEMA 1 in both flush and surface mounting, and it is built specifically around the CCV frame type for CC circuit breakers, so the breaker frame is what decides the swap: an ECC enclosure houses a CC frame breaker, and the PowerPacT B enclosure is sized for PowerPacT B frame breakers. Confirm the frame family of the breaker already specified on the panel schedule before you switch brands, because the enclosure follows the breaker, not the other way around.
8) What outdoor rainproof breaker enclosure can I use instead of an Eaton ECC when the breaker is a Square D?
Two Square D outdoor options cover that. The Square D PowerPact Q circuit breaker enclosure is a NEMA 3R enclosure for the PowerPact Q frame, and the Square D QO Series circuit breaker enclosure is a NEMA 3R enclosure for QO breakers. The Eaton ECC series covers the same outdoor rainproof NEMA 3R duty in 100A, 150A, 200A and 225A configurations, but it houses CCV frame type CC breakers. Pick the enclosure that matches the frame of the breaker you are actually installing - a Q frame breaker will not land in a CC frame enclosure, and QO branch breakers are a different animal again.
9) What amperage sizes does the Eaton ECC enclosure come in?
Four sizes across the outdoor NEMA 3R line: 100A (ECCVH100R), 150A (ECCVH150R), 200A (ECCVH200R) and 225A (ECC225R). The indoor NEMA 1 flush and surface cans, ECC225F and ECC225S, are the 225 frame. Size the enclosure to the CC breaker going in it, not to the connected load.
10) What size ground wire will fit the lug in the Eaton ECC enclosure?
The factory-installed ground lug takes one conductor from #14 through #2, copper or aluminum sizing within that range. That covers the equipment grounding conductor on most feeders in the 100A to 225A band this enclosure serves, so no separate ground bar kit is needed for a single ground run.
11) What else could I use instead of an Eaton ECC breaker enclosure?
Square D is the common alternate on the shelf. For an indoor NEMA 1 can, the PowerPacT B Series steel enclosure is the parallel choice. For an outdoor location, the PowerPact Q enclosure and the QO Series enclosure are both NEMA 3R. Bear in mind each of these is frame-specific the same way the ECC is CCV specific, so switching enclosure brands means switching the breaker brand too. If the CC breakers are already on site, stay with the ECC.
12) I need a disconnect at an exterior rooftop unit. Is an ECC enclosure the right part?
An ECC in NEMA 3R with a CC breaker inside works as a fused-equivalent breaker disconnect at outdoor equipment, provided the equipment is at 225V or below and the available fault current is under 10 kA. Match the amperage to the breaker: 100A, 150A, 200A and 225A are the outdoor sizes. Remember the breaker is a separate line on the order.
13) Is a Square D QO enclosure the same thing as an Eaton ECC enclosure?
No. The Square D QO Series circuit breaker enclosure is a NEMA 3R housing built around the QO breaker line, while the Eaton ECC enclosure is built for the CCV frame type and is used with CC circuit breakers. They look similar on a shelf and both are outdoor rainproof housings, but the interior mounting and breaker interface follow different frame families, so one is not a drop-in for the other. If the drawing calls out a CC frame breaker, the enclosure has to be the CCV frame enclosure.
14) I need a UL Listed breaker enclosure for a healthcare facility - how does the Eaton ECC compare to the Square D PowerPacT B?
The Eaton ECC enclosure is UL Listed, rated 225V with a 10 kAIC interrupt rating, and ships with a factory-installed ground lug accepting #14 to #2 conductors, which matters when a facility standard requires the grounding means to be part of the listed assembly rather than field-added.
