1) Can an Eaton Freedom NEMA non-reversing motor starter run a motor in both directions?
No. The Freedom NEMA starter in the ECN0501 family is a non-combination, non-reversing starter, so it drives a motor in one direction only. That covers pumps, fans and compressors that never need to run backward. If the load has to run forward and reverse, you need a reversing starter with the mechanically interlocked contactor pair instead, not this one. "Non-combination" also matters: there is no disconnect or circuit breaker built into the enclosure, so the branch circuit protection has to come from somewhere else in the panel.
2) Does the Eaton Freedom NEMA motor starter come with a disconnect or circuit breaker?
It does not. This is a non-combination starter, meaning the enclosure holds the contactor and overload relay but no fused switch or molded case breaker. 4) Which NEMA starter size do I order for my motor horsepower?
The Freedom NEMA enclosed starters are built in NEMA Size 0, Size 1 and Size 3, and the size is what sets how much motor you can hang on it, so it is picked from the motor nameplate full load amps and voltage, not from horsepower alone. Size 0 is the smallest of the three and Size 3 the largest. Sizes are not field-changeable, so the starter has to be ordered to match the motor: ECN0501AAA and ECN0511AAA are Size 0 and Size 1 units, and ECN0531AAA is a Size 3.
5) Will an Eaton ECN0511AAA starter protect a small 1 amp fractional horsepower motor?
Yes, if the motor's full load amps land inside the overload's dial range. The ECN0511AAA, a NEMA Size 1 Freedom starter, has a full load current adjustment range of 0.33 to 1.65 amps, so a motor drawing about 1 amp sits near the middle of the band where you want it. Set the dial to the actual nameplate FLA rather than to the top of the range. A motor pulling more than 1.65 amps needs a different overload heater range or a different starter.
