Eaton DG223NRB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What fuses go in the Eaton fusible general duty safety switch?
The fuse clips take Class H fuses. Class H is the one-time, non-current-limiting class, cheap and common, and it is what the switch is built around. If the equipment or the engineer calls for current-limiting protection, a Class H switch is the wrong starting point and you want an Eaton heavy duty switch with Class R rejection clips instead. Worth settling before the fuses get ordered, because Class R fuses will not seat correctly in plain Class H clips.
2) What amperage sizes does the Eaton general duty safety switch come in?
Six ratings: 30A, 60A, 100A, 200A, 400A and 600A. That spread covers the usual jobs, a 30 or 60 amp at a rooftop or pad-mounted HVAC unit, 100 or 200 amp for a residential service or a small commercial feeder, and 400 or 600 amp for larger equipment feeders. Size the switch to the overcurrent device and conductor ahead of it, not to the nameplate FLA alone.
3) Is a 240V Eaton general duty disconnect OK for 208V three phase?
Yes. The switch is rated 240V, and a 208V three phase system sits under that, so the 240V rating covers it. Order the 3P version for three phase. What it will not do is 480V, general duty at 240V tops out well below a 277/480 system, so a 480V feeder needs a 600V rated heavy duty switch instead.
4) Is a general duty switch heavy enough for a commercial building, or do I need heavy duty?
General duty is built for residential and light commercial work, 240V and below, with Class H fuse provisions. It suits service disconnects, HVAC shutoffs, and light commercial power control. Where it runs out is higher voltage, current limiting fuse requirements, or industrial duty cycling, all of which point to a heavy duty switch. For a property manager standardizing HVAC disconnects across a building at 240V, general duty is the right tool. For a 480V industrial feeder it is not.
