1) Can I mount the Eaton general duty safety switch outside next to an AC condenser?
Only if you order the NEMA 3R version. The switch is built in both NEMA 1 and NEMA 3R enclosures, and NEMA 1 is an indoor general purpose box with no rain protection, so it does not belong on an exterior wall or a roof curb, even tucked under an eave. NEMA 3R is the rainproof enclosure and is the one that goes beside a condensing unit, a heat pump or a rooftop unit. Both enclosures carry the same 240V rating, so the choice is purely about where the switch hangs.
2) Should I order the fusible or the non-fusible Eaton general duty disconnect?
It comes down to whether the circuit needs overcurrent protection out at the equipment. Non-fusible is a disconnecting means and nothing more: it opens the circuit for service while the breaker back at the panel keeps protecting the conductors. Go fusible when the equipment nameplate calls out a maximum fuse size, or when the spec wants the protection local to the load. The fusible build takes Class H fuses and is furnished with a neutral. Fuse amp size follows the equipment nameplate, not the amp rating stamped on the switch.
3) Will the Eaton general duty safety switch work on a 480 volt three phase feeder?
No. The general duty switch is rated 240V and that is the ceiling, so a 480 volt circuit is outside its range no matter which amperage, enclosure or pole count you pick. At 240V it covers 120/240 single phase work and 240 volt three phase. For a 480 volt feeder you need a switch rated 600V, which puts you in the heavy duty class rather than general duty.
4) What class of fuse goes in the fusible Eaton general duty safety switch?
Class H. The fuse provisions are Class H, so that is what the fuse clips are built around, in the amp size the equipment nameplate asks for and no larger than the switch rating. If the drawing or the spec calls for current limiting fuses, Class J or Class R with rejection, this is not the switch to buy for it. Those classes need a switch with the matching fuse block or rejection hardware.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering an Eaton general duty safety switch?
Four decisions settle the part. Amperage: 30A, 60A, 100A, 200A, 400A or 600A. Fusible with neutral, or non-fusible. NEMA 1 for indoors or NEMA 3R for outdoors. And 2P or 3P.
