Eaton D3RF3A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Eaton D3RF3 ice cube relay come in a DC coil, or only 120VAC?
Both. The D3RF3 series is ordered by coil voltage: D3RF3A is the 120V AC coil version, and D3RF3T1 is the 24V DC coil version. Everything else about the relay is the same 3PDT octal base package, so pick the coil that matches your control circuit, not the load. A 24VDC panel control scheme needs the T1; a 120VAC ladder control circuit needs the A.
2) Will the Eaton D3RF3 relay plug into a standard 11-pin socket?
No. The D3RF3 is an octal base relay, which is the 8-pin round pattern. An 11-pin socket is for 3PDT relays built on the undecal base and the pins will not line up. If your existing socket is an 8-pin octal, the D3RF3 drops straight in.
3) Can I switch a 10 amp motor load directly with this Eaton ice cube relay?
The D3RF3 is rated 10A at 120VAC and is a general-purpose control relay, not a motor starter. It is appropriate for pilot duty, contactor coils, solenoids, lighting contactor control and similar control loads inside a panel. Running an actual motor should go through a contactor or starter that the relay energizes, with the overload protection handled there.
4) Does the Eaton D3RF3 relay come with a socket and hold-down clip?
The D3RF3 part numbers, D3RF3A and D3RF3T1, are the relay only. An octal (8-pin) socket and a retaining clip are separate items and you will need them to mount the relay in a panel. If you are replacing a relay in an existing octal socket, the relay alone is all you need.
5) Is a 3PDT relay on an octal base normal, or should I expect 11-pin for three poles?
Three poles on an 8-pin octal is the less common arrangement, and it is worth knowing before you order a socket. Most 3PDT ice cube relays sit on an 11-pin base; the Eaton D3RF3 puts the 3PDT switching on an octal base instead, which saves panel space but means you need an octal socket, not the 11-pin socket a lot of panel builders keep on the shelf for three-pole work.
6) How much room do I need in the enclosure for the Eaton D3RF3 relay?
The relay body measures 1.5 in wide, 3 in long/deep and 1.5 in high. Allow additional depth beyond that 3 in figure for the socket itself and for the wire bend radius at the terminals when you lay out a DIN rail row of them.
7) Which Eaton part number do I order for a 24VDC PLC output?
D3RF3T1, the 24V DC coil version. A typical PLC transistor or relay output card runs 24VDC, so that is the coil to match; the 120VAC version, D3RF3A, would need a separate AC control source. Contact side stays 10A either way.
8) Can I use one pole of this relay for 120V and another for a low-voltage signal?
Mixing voltages across poles of a general-purpose ice cube relay is not something the D3RF3 data supports, and most panel shops avoid it. The relay is rated 10A at 120VAC across its 3PDT contacts. If you need genuine isolation between a line-voltage circuit and a low-level signal, use separate relays.
9) I only need to switch two circuits. Do I lose anything by using this 3PDT relay?
No. The D3RF3 gives you three sets of changeover contacts and you can simply leave the third pole unwired. Panel builders often standardize on the 3PDT so one part number covers single, double and triple switching jobs, which cuts down on spares. The spare pole is also handy later for a status light or an interlock without swapping the relay.
