1) What is the difference between the Eaton SEPD2 and SEPD3 barrier kits?
The two Pow-R-Xpress service entrance barrier kits are matched to the breaker frame you are installing. SEPD2 is for a Power Defense Frame 2 breaker used with an SEK1/2 module, and SEPD3 is for a Power Defense Frame 3 breaker used with an SEK4/6 module. Pick the kit by the frame size of the main breaker going into the panel, not by the panel itself, because the barrier has to suit the breaker it isolates.
2) Which Eaton barrier kit do I order for a Power Defense Frame 3 main breaker?
Order the SEPD3. That kit is the one built around the Power Defense Frame 3 circuit breaker with the SEK4/6 module. The SEPD2 will not serve that breaker, it is the Frame 2 and SEK1/2 kit. Frame size is the deciding fact here, so confirm the frame stamped on the breaker before ordering.
3) What does the Eaton Pow-R-Xpress SEPD barrier kit actually do in a panel?
It is a service entrance barrier kit, not an enclosure or a breaker. In a service entrance installation the incoming line side conductors stay energized even with the main open, so the kit provides the physical separation between that line side compartment and the rest of the gear. Eaton lists it as an MB service entrance kit, meaning it is for main breaker service entrance configurations.
4) Do I need a service entrance barrier kit for a main breaker panel, or is the panel enough on its own?
A main breaker panel used as service entrance equipment needs the line side isolated, and that is what the SEPD kit adds. The panel and breaker on their own do not give you that separation. If the gear is fed downstream of the service disconnect rather than serving as the service entrance, the kit is not what you need.
