1) Can the MM1000 measure current directly, or do I need a clamp?
Current measurement on the MM1000 is in-line through the meter leads, rated to 10A AC/DC. That means breaking the circuit and putting the meter in series. For anything above 10A, or for readings you do not want to break the circuit to take, you need a clamp meter instead. Motor loads, feeders, and service conductors are all clamp territory.
2) Does the MM1000 need range selection, or does it pick the range itself?
Voltage measurement is auto ranging, so you set the function and the meter sorts the range out. Useful when you are moving between control voltage and line voltage on the same call and do not want to be turning the dial for every reading.
3) Will the Klein MM1000 survive being dropped off a ladder?
Drop protection on the MM1000 is rated to 6.6 feet (2 m), which covers a fall from a step ladder or off a panel ledge. Enclosure rating is IP20, so it is protected against finger-sized solid objects but has no water rating. Keep it out of rain and wet vault work.
4) Is the Klein MM1000 readable inside a dark panel or crawlspace?
The display is backlit, so readings stay legible in an unlit electrical room or under a building. There is also an analog bar graph alongside the digits, which is what you want when you are watching a value move (a slowly dying capacitor, a pot being adjusted, contact bounce) rather than reading one static number.
