Klein Tools ET50 Electronic Voltage Tester

The ET50 reads AC and DC from 120 to 600 volts. That covers standard 120V and 240V branch circuits, 277V lighting, and 480V three-phase gear. It won't give you a reading on low-voltage control, doorbell, or thermostat wiring below 120V, so for 24V work you need a different instrument.

It indicates voltage without a battery, so a dead cell doesn't leave you with a tester that falsely reads a live circuit as safe. Batteries ship with it and power the full indication, but the voltage detection itself does not depend on them.

The ET50 uses a low impedance circuit specifically to reduce false readings. Low-Z testers bleed off the induced capacitive coupling that makes a non-contact pen light up on a dead conductor running beside a live one. If you're chasing ghost voltage on long parallel runs, this is the tool type you want rather than a pen tester.

Two ways at once: lights and vibration. In a noisy mechanical room or a dim crawlspace where you can't hear a beeper or read a display cleanly, the haptic buzz confirms live voltage in your hand. That's the practical difference between it and an indicator that only flashes.

The ET50 is solid state, and Klein states that design is safer than solenoid testers. Solenoid units draw significant current to drive a plunger, which produces heat, arcing risk, and can trip GFCI and AFCI devices during testing. The tradeoff is that a solenoid gives you a mechanical buzz with no electronics at all; the ET50 answers that with vibration feedback plus voltage indication that survives a dead battery.

Rated for a 9.8 ft (3 m) drop. That covers a fall off a standard step ladder or from ceiling grid height onto a hard floor, which is where most testers get killed on commercial fit-outs.
