Emtek 8022 Colonial Plate 3-3/8" CTC - Sideplate Lockset - Brass Thumbturn Privacy Non-Keyed Style

If your door already has the standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore, the 8022 Colonial drops in. It uses one standard 2-1/8 inch bore, and the latch is adjustable for either a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, which are the two backsets found on residential doors. Door thickness is covered from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches on the standard latch. The one thing to check is the sideplate itself: the plate is a long escutcheon rather than a round rose, so the face of your door needs clear room for it above and below the bore, and any old round-rose screw holes will be hidden under it.

Privacy only, no key. The 8022 Colonial is a bed and bath function: the brass thumbturn on the inside locks the door, and there is no cylinder and no keyway on either side. Outside there is an emergency release, not a lock. If you need a door that keys, such as an exterior door or an office, this is the wrong function and you want a keyed entry sideplate instead.

Handing is a required selection, right hand or left hand, and it genuinely matters on this one. The sideplate is not symmetrical in use and a leverset has to point the correct way, so an unhanded order gets you a lever that swings the wrong direction. Stand outside the door, on the side it opens away from you: hinges on the right is right hand, hinges on the left is left hand.

It ships as a complete set: the knob or lever you selected, the sideplate, the latch, and the strike plate. You do not order the latch separately. What you do have to decide at order time is the inside trim style, the handing, and the backset, all three of which are required choices. The latch faceplate can be had with round or square corners so it matches the mortise already cut in the edge of your door.

Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the bore. If it is 2-3/8 inches, take the 2-3/8; if it is 2-3/4, take the 2-3/4. Backset is a required selection on this set, and getting it wrong means the latch tailpiece does not reach the hub. Most residential interior doors are 2-3/8; 2-3/4 turns up more on older or heavier doors.

That is the center-to-center distance between the knob or lever spindle and the thumbturn on the plate, 3-3/8 inches. It matters when you are matching other Emtek sideplates already on the doors: a keyed or passage plate in the same Colonial style at the same 3-3/8 inch CTC lines the two holes up in the same place, so the openings look identical down the hallway. It also tells you the plate is drilled for a second hole, so you cannot use it on a door bored for a single bore only.

Any of Emtek's brass knob or lever styles can be ordered on the Colonial plate, and the trim selection is required rather than optional. That spans traditional shapes like the Providence, Waverly and Victoria knobs, crystal options such as the Windsor and Georgetown, and modern levers including the Stuttgart, Helios and Athena. Because the plate stays Colonial regardless, you can run one plate style through a whole house and change only the knob on a feature door.

It is a residential product, and that is worth knowing before you spec it into a building. The 8022 is a tubular bored lockset in solid brass, built for houses and interior bedroom and bath doors. For a commercial corridor or a high traffic multi-family unit door you want a commercial-duty bored or mortise lock instead. For the private side of a condo or an apartment's own bedroom and bath doors, it is a sensible fit.

A rosette set puts a small round trim ring around the knob and nothing else. A sideplate set like the 8022 Colonial mounts the knob or lever on a long brass plate that also carries the thumbturn, 3-3/8 inches from the knob center. Practically, the plate covers more of the door face, gives a period Colonial look, and hides marks or old holes from previous hardware. It also means one plate profile can be repeated across passage, privacy and keyed doors so the whole house reads the same.

The 8022 Colonial is privacy only and has no cylinder, so it will not serve an entry door. For a sideplate-style deadbolt, Omnia's D12036 family is the closest thing in the same solid brass sideplate idea: the D12036A is a single cylinder version, the D12036AC is double cylinder for a door with glass beside the lock, and the D12036PD is a double dummy at 5-1/2 inch center to center for an inactive leaf. Those are Omnia rather than Emtek, so the plate design will not match an Emtek Colonial plate exactly.
