1) Does the Emtek 818TP thumbturn privacy bolt come with a knob or lever, or do I need to order that separately?
The 818TP is the privacy bolt only. The knob or lever set is a separate order. What you get in the box is the thumbturn, the privacy latch, the strike plate, and the emergency release tool. The bolt is meant to run above any Emtek Brass passage set, so the passage knob or lever latches the door and the thumbturn bolt above it does the locking. If you are pairing it with a leverset, handing has to be specified on the lever order.
2) Will the Emtek 818TP privacy bolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it only for 1-3/4?
Both. The 818TP covers 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch doors as supplied, which takes in the standard commercial 1-3/4 and the older 1-3/8 interior slabs. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4, the actual thickness has to be called out when you order, since there is a door thickness field on the order to do exactly that.
3) What backset do I need to specify for the Emtek 818TP, and will it work in an existing bored door?
Backset is 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch, and it is a required choice at order time. Those are the two backsets bored doors are prepped to, so measure from the door edge to the center of the hole and pick the match. The cross bore is 2-1/8 inch, again the standard bore size, so a door already prepped for a tubular lock takes this bolt without new boring. You do need a second bore above the passage set for the bolt itself, since this is a separate tubular unit rather than part of the knob.
4) How do you get into a bathroom locked with an Emtek 818TP thumbturn bolt if someone is stuck inside?
An emergency release tool ships with the bolt. Turning the thumbturn from the room side throws the bolt, and the release tool opens it from the corridor side. That matters if you are speccing these for bedrooms or baths in a rental or hotel, because it is the difference between a maintenance call and a damaged door. Keep the tool with the maintenance keys, not in the room.
5) Is the Emtek 818TP privacy bolt rated for commercial use in an office building or school?
The 818TP is a residential product. It is a non-keyed brass tubular privacy bolt for bedroom and bath doors, and that is the duty it is built for. For an institutional corridor, a classroom, or a public restroom you want a commercial bored or mortise lockset instead, not a residential thumbturn bolt paired with a passage set. Where it does fit commercially is hospitality guest rooms and multi-family units, which are residential openings inside a commercial building.
6) Can I use a thumbturn privacy bolt instead of a privacy knob, and why would I?
You can, and the reason is usually that you want the lever or knob to stay a plain passage set. A privacy knob puts the push button and the release hole in the knob itself, which limits your design choices and puts wear on the knob mechanism. The 818TP splits the job: the passage set just latches, and a separate tubular thumbturn bolt above it does the privacy locking. It also lets you mix thumbturn design and rosette design independently. The tradeoff is a second bore in the door and a second piece of hardware to order.

Ten finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), and French Antique (US7). Those are US finish codes, so if the passage sets already on your doors are called out by the same code the bolt will match. There are also four thumbturn designs and four rosette designs, each in those ten finishes, so the trim can be matched to the rosettes on the existing sets.
8) Does the Emtek 818TP privacy bolt need a key, and can it be keyed alike with the rest of the building?
No key and no cylinder. The 818TP is non-keyed, operated by a thumbturn on the inside and the emergency release tool from the outside, so it cannot be brought into a keying system or a master key schedule. If you need the door to be key-operated from the corridor, this is the wrong function, and you want a keyed entry or storeroom lockset on that opening instead.
9) What latch faceplate shape does the Emtek 818TP use, and will it drop into my existing mortise in the door edge?
The latch faceplate is available round corner or square corner, so it can be matched to what is already routed into the door edge. If the existing prep has square corners, take the square faceplate and the new latch drops into the same mortise with no rework. Combine that with the 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset and a door already prepped for a tubular lock takes the bolt directly.
10) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Emtek 818TP privacy bolt?
Not for the bolt itself. The thumbturn bolt is non-handed. Handing gets specified on the leverset that goes with it, since levers are handed and knobs are not. So on a lever opening you will call out left or right hand on the lever order and just pick finish and backset on the bolt.
11) Will the Emtek 818TP match my existing Emtek doors, or does it only work with certain sets?
Any Emtek Brass passage set takes this thumbturn bolt, which is the point of it.
