Emtek 8368-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Emtek 8368 deadbolt keyed on both sides, or does it have a thumbturn inside?
Key on both sides. The 8368 Rectangular is the double cylinder version, so there is no inside thumbturn and you need a key to retract the bolt from inside as well as outside. That is the point of it on a door with glass beside or in it, since breaking the glass gets an intruder nowhere without a key. It is also why a lot of jurisdictions restrict double cylinder on a required egress door in a dwelling. If you want key outside and turn inside on the same rectangular trim, ask for the single cylinder version of the 8368 instead.
2) What backset does the Emtek 8368 deadbolt come with, and can I get 2-3/4 inch?
Both. The standard latch is 2-3/8 inch backset, and 2-3/4 inch is a no-cost selection you make when ordering. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing 2-1/8 inch cross bore: if that is 2-3/8, take the standard; if 2-3/4, specify it. Those are the only two backsets used on residential bored doors, so an existing prep will be one or the other.
3) Will the Emtek 8368 drop into my existing deadbolt holes without new boring?
If the door is already bored for a standard tubular deadbolt, yes. The 8368 uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 1 inch edge bore, which is standard door prep, with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset to match what is there. No handing to worry about either, so the same part works on a left or right hand door. What changes on a replacement is the strike: a brass trim strike and a heavy gauge steel understrike ship with every deadbolt, and the understrike wants to be screwed into the jamb framing, not just the stop.
4) Can the Emtek 8368 be keyed alike with the Schlage locks already on my other doors?
Yes, if those locks are Schlage C keyway. The 8368 ships with a Schlage C cylinder as standard, and keying is selected free when you order: keyed different, keyed alike across the deadbolts you buy together, or keyed to a specific code if you already run a keying system and can give the code. If your building is on Weiser instead, the WR5 keyway version of the 8368 is ordered by putting a W in front of the product code, with no upcharge for the cylinder swap, and it keys into an existing Weiser system.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 8368 so I get the right part?
Four things. Keyway, Schlage C standard or Weiser WR5 (the W prefix, no upcharge). Finish, one of ten. Backset, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 to match the existing bore. And keying, either keyed different, keyed alike across the order, or keyed to a code you supply. Door thickness only needs calling out if it is not 1-3/4 inches; the range covered is 1-3/8 to 2 inches. Handing is not part of it, the 8368 works either hand.
6) Does the Emtek 8368 carry a fire rating for a rated opening?
The Emtek 8368 is a residential brass deadbolt. When the opening is rated and the deadbolt has to answer for it, the Hager 3214 double cylinder, Hager 3215 single cylinder, Hager 3115 and Hager 3118 all carry a fire rating over a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, and the Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. Specify one of those where the label governs and keep the 8368 for unrated residential entries.
7) I need a double cylinder deadbolt that carries an ANSI grade for a commercial spec - what should I use instead of the Emtek 8368?
The Emtek 8368 is a residential double cylinder deadbolt. When the drawing calls for a graded double cylinder unit, the Design Hardware D1 Series double cylinder deadbolt is Grade 1 and extra heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder is Grade 1 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. Stepping down, the Dexter DB2000 double cylinder is Grade 2 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Delaney LU Series double cylinder is Grade 2 in stainless steel US32D, and the Callan Model 210S is a Grade 3 double cylinder. All keep the key-both-sides function of the 8368.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the Emtek 8368 rectangular deadbolt in a double cylinder from another decorative brand?
The Emtek 8368 is a double cylinder tubular deadbolt with a rectangular rose in solid brass. On the decorative side, the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square Deadbolt is also a double cylinder, keyed on both faces, with a square rose rather than a rectangular one; the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Round Deadbolt is the same double cylinder function with a round rose. Baldwin Estates 8011 Contemporary is a 1-5/8 inch double cylinder deadbolt if a smaller trim footprint suits the door. All three are keyed both sides like the 8368, so the security behavior at a glass-adjacent door is the same and the choice comes down to rose shape and trim size.
9) The door does not need a key on the inside - what is the single cylinder version to order instead of the 8368?
The Emtek 8368 is keyed on both faces, which is not what you want on a bedroom or interior egress door. For a cylinder outside and thumbturn inside, the Bravura Rectangle Deadbolt single cylinder keeps a rectangular trim shape and is Grade 2. Other cylinder x thumbturn options include the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder, Grade 1 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, the Accentra D111 Grade 1 with a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3215 Grade 2 with a 1 inch throw. Note that a double cylinder deadbolt requires a key to exit, so many jurisdictions restrict it on a required egress door.
10) Which deadbolts share the Emtek 8368's Schlage C keyway so I can key them into the same system?
The Emtek 8368 ships with a Schlage C keyway as standard, with a Weiser WR5 cylinder available as a no-upcharge substitution. If you are extending a Schlage C system onto commercial openings, the Hager 3214 double cylinder uses a Schlage C keyway for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3115 cylinder x thumbturn and Hager 3118 classroom deadbolt with a 6-pin cylinder use the same keyway over that door thickness range. The Dormakaba D900 small case mortise deadbolt is furnished with SC keyways as well. Matching the keyway is what lets one key run the decorative Emtek entry and the back-of-house doors.
11) My door is thicker than 2 inches - what deadbolt works where the Emtek 8368 does not?
The Emtek 8368 covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, with the EMPowered version reaching 2-1/4 inch. For a thicker slab in a standard mechanical deadbolt, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. If the door falls inside the 8368's range, the Deltana 7312KA2 double cylinder covers the same 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch span and is Grade 3. Confirm the measured thickness at the lock edge before ordering, since the collar and tailpiece are sized to it.
12) Is a deadlock or exit deadlock the same thing as the Emtek 8368 double cylinder deadbolt?
No. The Emtek 8368 is keyed on both the outside and the inside. The Arrow E60 exit deadlock is non-keyed, a blank plate outside with a thumbturn inside, so nobody enters with a key. The Corbin Russwin DL2211 and DL3211 Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks are cylinder by blank, keyed outside with nothing to operate inside. The Callan 205S is a one-sided half-bore deadbolt, which only bores partway through the door. Any of those changes who can throw and retract the bolt from which side, so they are not drop-in substitutes for a key-both-sides opening.
13) What finishes does the Emtek 8368 rectangular deadbolt come in?
Ten: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), and French Antique (US7). All ten are available with either the Schlage C or the Weiser WR5 cylinder, so the keyway choice does not narrow the finish choice. Worth knowing on a matching job: US3NL is unlacquered, so it will patina over time rather than staying bright, while US3 is the lifetime-coated polished brass that stays as shipped.
14) Is the Emtek 8368 deadbolt solid brass or brass plated?
Solid brass on the cylinder, housing, collar, thumbturn and rosette, with a hardened steel bolt and a heavy gauge steel understrike. So the visible trim is brass all the way through rather than a plated shell over pot metal, which is why the unlacquered US3NL finish can be allowed to age instead of wearing through. The bolt itself is steel, as it should be.
15) I need a double cylinder deadbolt but the Emtek trim does not match my building. What else is there?
Depends on the look you are matching. Baldwin Reserve does double cylinder in a contemporary square (DC.CSD) and a contemporary round (DC.CRD), and the Baldwin Estates 8011 is a 1-5/8 inch contemporary double cylinder. On the value side the Callan 210S is a Grade 3 double cylinder and the Delaney LU Series is a Grade 2 double cylinder in stainless steel (US32D). For a straight commercial-grade square-off, the Design Hardware D1 Series is Grade 1 double cylinder rated for 1-3/4 inch doors. Only the Emtek 8368 among these carries the rectangular solid brass trim in ten finishes.
16) Do I need to buy a strike plate with the Emtek 8368 deadbolt?
No, the strike comes in the box. Every 8368 ships with a brass trim strike in the matching finish plus a heavy gauge steel understrike that sits behind it. On a retrofit the old strike pocket usually needs to be adjusted, since the new understrike is what does the actual work of resisting a kick, and it needs long screws reaching the stud behind the jamb.
17) I have a 2 inch thick entry door. Will the Emtek 8368 deadbolt still work?
Yes, 2 inches is the top of the range for the 8368, which covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. Call out the thickness on the order, because the standard build is set for 1-3/4 inches. If the door is thicker than 2 inches, this deadbolt will not make it; the Deltana 7312KA2 double cylinder covers the same 1-3/8 to 2 inch window, so it is not a way around the limit either.
18) I want a keypad or credential deadbolt instead of a keyed one like the Emtek 8368 - what are the options?
The Emtek 8368 is a mechanical, non-electronic deadbolt. To move a unit to codes or credentials, the Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote, the Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt, and the Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel. For multihousing and hospitality, the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, and the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt. These change how the door is credentialed and rekeyed across a fleet, which the 8368's Schlage C or Weiser WR5 cylinder does mechanically.
19) What looks like an alternative to the Emtek 8368 but will not fit a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore?
The Emtek 8368 is a tubular deadbolt for standard door prep, a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and 1 inch edge bore. Several items in the same aisle prep differently. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike, not a lock. The Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer and the BEST 8T is a T Series tubular deadbolt tube component, both parts of a lock rather than a complete one. The Codelocks CL200 is a surface deadbolt with key override and the Codelocks CL2200 is an electronic surface deadbolt, both mounted on the face of the door instead of through a bore. The Dormakaba D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt and needs a mortise pocket. None of these drop into an existing 8368 prep.
20) I am not sure whether the door is bored 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset - is there a deadbolt that covers both?
The Emtek 8368 handles either, but you specify it at order: the standard latch is 2-3/8 inch backset and 2-3/4 inch is called out when required. If you would rather sort it at the door, the Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an adjustable backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, and the Brinks Raleigh and Mendocino single cylinder deadbolts have a 4 way adjustable backset. Those are all cylinder x thumbturn, so they change the function away from key-both-sides.
21) My building standardizes on small format interchangeable core - what deadbolt takes an SFIC instead of the Emtek 8368's Schlage C cylinder?
The Emtek 8368 comes with a Schlage C cylinder, or a Weiser WR5 cylinder specified by adding a W to the front of the code. Neither takes an interchangeable core. For an SFIC program, the Arrow E61 26D IC is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock with SFIC prep supplied less core, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors; the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single deadbolt with an interchangeable core and a 2-3/4 inch backset; and the Delaney LM Series is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D. All three are cylinder x thumbturn rather than double cylinder.
22) I want the rectangular trim look of the Emtek 8368 but on a different rose shape - what else is out there?
The Emtek 8368 uses a rectangular rose in the American Classic style with a solid brass housing, collar, thumbturn and rosette. For a square face, the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square Deadbolt is double cylinder, and the Bravura 310SC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary square single cylinder unit. For a round face, the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Round Deadbolt is double cylinder, the Bravura 310RC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary round, and the Bravura 310B Elite is a Grade 2 traditional round. The Callan 200S is a Grade 3 square trim single cylinder if the trim shape matters more than the material.
