Emtek 8468-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Emtek 8468 deadbolt drop into the holes left by my old deadbolt?
If the old lock used a standard tubular deadbolt prep, it will. The 8468 is a tubular deadbolt that takes a 2-1/8 inch cross bore through the face of the door and a 1 inch edge bore, which is the common prep on residential deadbolts, and it uses standard door prep and installation. It also ships with its own brass trim strike and a heavy gauge steel understrike, so the frame side gets new hardware rather than reusing whatever is there. The one thing to settle before ordering is backset, since the standard latch is 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch has to be called out.
2) Do I need the 2-3/8 or the 2-3/4 backset on the Emtek 8468?
Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the bolt hole. That distance is your backset, and the 8468 is built either way: 2-3/8 inch is what ships as standard, and 2-3/4 inch is supplied when you specify it. Those are the two backsets used on residential entry doors, so an existing opening will be one or the other. Pick wrong and the bolt hole in the face of the door will not line up with the bore in the edge.
3) Can I use the Emtek 8468 deadbolt on a commercial or fire rated door?
The 8468 is a residential deadbolt in Emtek's brass collection, so for a commercial opening or a labeled fire door you want a graded lock instead. The Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn deadbolt that also uses the Schlage C keyway and carries a fire rating, fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it keys into the same system as the Emtek if you are mixing residential and commercial doors on one property. Where the spec calls for Grade 1, the Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt with a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch.
4) Is the Emtek 8468 keyed on both sides or is there a thumbturn inside?
Key outside, thumbturn inside. The 8468 is a single cylinder deadbolt, cylinder by thumbturn, so anyone inside throws and retracts the bolt by hand without a key. If you need a key on the interior as well, for instance on a door with glass next to it, this is the wrong function and you want a double cylinder deadbolt instead. The Baldwin Reserve Double Cylinder Contemporary Square Deadbolt is a double cylinder option, and the Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, the same thickness range the 8468 covers.
5) Can the Emtek 8468 be keyed to match my existing Weiser or Schlage keys?
Both keyways are offered. As standard the 8468 uses the Schlage C keyway, the most common residential keyway in North America. Emtek also supplies a Weiser WR5 cylinder with no upcharge for the substitution, and that cylinder can be keyed into an existing Weiser system. Order the Weiser version by adding a W to the front of the product code: W8468US10B in oil rubbed bronze, W8468US15 in satin nickel, and so on across the finish range.
6) Which deadbolts from other brands are the closest match to the Emtek 8468 rectangular deadbolt?
The Emtek 8468 is a tubular deadbolt with a keyed cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside, dressed in rectangular trim. The Bravura Rectangle Deadbolt (BV910005) is the nearest cross-brand match on both counts: rectangular trim and the same cylinder x thumbturn function, rated Grade 2. The Bravura 310SC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary square deadbolt with the same cylinder x thumbturn function, and the Callan 200S is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with square trim. All three hold the square-cornered look if the 8468 profile is what you are matching on the rest of the door.
7) I need an ANSI Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt in the same cylinder x thumbturn function as the Emtek 8468 - what should I look at?
Three Grade 1 deadbolts run the same cylinder outside, thumbturn inside function. The Accentra D111 is Grade 1 with a 2-3/8 inch backset and fits doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. The Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 for doors 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch. The Deltana CL200LM is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt in the same function. Check the door first: the Emtek 8468 covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch stock, so on a full 2 inch door the D111 and DB1000 thickness ranges stop short of it.
8) What other brand makes a single cylinder deadbolt on the Schlage C keyway so it keys into the same system as the Emtek 8468?
The Emtek 8468 ships on the Schlage C keyway as standard, with the Weiser WR5 keyway available by adding a W to the front of the product code. Hager builds the same keyway into three deadbolts: the 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt on Schlage C, the 3215 is a Grade 2 single cylinder with a 1 inch throw, and the 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt on Schlage C with a 6-pin cylinder. All three are fire rated and fit doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, so a mixed order can stay on one key across Emtek trim inside the units and Hager hardware on the back-of-house doors.
9) The door has glass next to the lock and needs a key on both sides - what replaces the Emtek 8468 there?
The Emtek 8468 is a single cylinder deadbolt, so the inside is a thumbturn that can be reached through broken glass. For a key on both faces, the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt on the same Schlage C keyway, which keeps a glass-front door on the existing key. The Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square is a double cylinder deadbolt that holds a squared trim profile, the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder is Grade 1 for doors 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch, and the Design Hardware D1 is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty double cylinder for 1-3/4 inch doors. Confirm double cylinder is permitted on the opening before ordering, since egress rules differ by occupancy.
10) Does the Emtek 8468 come with a strike plate, or do I have to buy one?
The strike is in the box. Every 8468 ships with a brass trim strike to match the lock finish plus a heavy gauge steel understrike that goes behind it into the jamb. The single cylinder version also includes the extension collar used on thin doors. On the lock itself, the cylinder, housing, collar, thumbturn and rosette are solid brass, and the bolt is hardened steel.
11) What finishes does the Emtek 8468 rectangular deadbolt come in?
Ten, and each one is offered with either cylinder. The finishes are Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19) and Polished Chrome (US26). All ten are available with the standard Schlage cylinder or the Weiser WR5 cylinder, so a keyway change does not limit the finish you can match to the rest of the door hardware. The trim under the finish is solid brass, not plated steel.
12) I am ordering deadbolts for doors I have not measured. Is there one that fits either backset?
Not the Emtek 8468. Its latch is fixed at whichever backset you order, 2-3/8 inch standard or 2-3/4 inch on request, so the doors have to be measured first. If you are buying for a batch of openings with unknown backsets, an adjustable-backset lock removes that risk: the Brinks Raleigh Series E2401 is a transitional round single cylinder deadbolt with a 4 way adjustable backset, and the Brinks Mendocino Series E2402 is the contemporary square version of the same thing. Both are cylinder by thumbturn, the same function as the 8468.
13) The door only needs to lock from the inside and never takes a key - is there a simpler alternative to the Emtek 8468?
Yes. The Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a blank plate x thumbturn function, non-keyed, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch - it throws the same bolt with a thumbturn inside and a plain plate outside, so there is no cylinder to key or maintain. For an opening that is operated from one face only, the Callan 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt. Both drop the keying step that the 8468 carries with its Schlage C or Weiser cylinder.
14) My door is 2-1/4 inches thick. The Emtek 8468 covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch - what deadbolt goes on a door that thick?
The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock built for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch, which is the range that picks up where the 8468 stops. Understand what changes with it: the DL3011 is a cylinder x blank function, keyed on the outside with a blank plate on the inside rather than the thumbturn the 8468 gives you. If the inside of the opening has to turn without a key, that difference decides the order, not the thickness.
15) Which parts turn up in deadbolt searches but will not actually replace an Emtek 8468?
Three come up often and none of them lock a door on their own. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike for latchbolt and deadbolt functions with a straight lip - it is the frame side of the opening, not the lock. The Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer, a fitment part for a double cylinder installation. The BEST 8T is the tubular deadbolt tube component from the T Series, the bolt assembly rather than a complete deadbolt with trim and cylinder. The 8468 is a complete tubular single cylinder deadbolt, so if you are replacing one, none of these three is the line to order.
16) Our facility runs small format interchangeable core. What deadbolt takes an SFIC instead of the Emtek 8468 cylinder?
The Emtek 8468 comes with its cylinder in place, on the Schlage C keyway as standard or Weiser WR5 by adding a W to the product code. If the core has to come from your own system, the Arrow E61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock with SFIC prep supplied less core, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. The Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 interchangeable core single deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Delaney LM Series 301702 is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D. All three let your locksmith drop in the house core rather than key a supplied cylinder.
17) I do not know the backset on every door in the building - is there a deadbolt that adjusts instead of specifying like the Emtek 8468 does?
The 8468 ships with a 2-3/8 inch backset latch as standard and takes a 2-3/4 inch latch when you specify it, so the measurement has to be known at order time. If crews are hitting doors of mixed vintage, the Brinks Raleigh E2401 round and Brinks Mendocino E2402 square are both single cylinder cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts with a 4-way adjustable backset, the Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with adjustable backset for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, and the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset. One part number then covers both bore positions.
18) The door can't be bored for a standard deadbolt - what mounts on the surface instead of the Emtek 8468?
The 8468 needs standard door prep, a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 1 inch edge bore, so it is not an option on a door you cannot drill. The Codelocks CL200 is a light duty surface deadbolt with key override that mounts to the face of the door instead of through it. The Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel if the same surface mounting has to be code operated. Both trade the through-bore for a surface installation.
19) Do I have to specify left hand or right hand for the Emtek 8468 deadbolt?
No handing to specify. The 8468 is a deadbolt with no latch bevel, so the same unit works on an inswing or outswing door and on a left or right hand swing. What you do have to specify is backset, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch, and door thickness if the door is thicker than the 1-3/4 inch standard.
20) What is the difference between the US3 polished brass and US3NL unlacquered brass on the Emtek 8468?
US3 Polished Brass Lifetime carries a protective coating that holds the bright polish, so it stays looking the way it arrives. US3NL is the same solid brass with no coating on it, a living finish that darkens and patinas with handling and weather. Neither is more durable as metal, since the cylinder, housing, collar, thumbturn and rosette are solid brass either way. It is purely whether you want the deadbolt to keep its shine or age into the rest of an unlacquered brass hardware set.
21) I want rectangular trim on my deadbolt to match square rosettes. What are my options?
The Emtek 8468 is the rectangular escutcheon version, American Classic styling in solid brass, cylinder by thumbturn. If you want the same rectangular look from another brand, the Bravura Rectangle Deadbolt is a Grade 2 single cylinder with the same function. For squared contemporary trim rather than rectangular, the Bravura 310SC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary square deadbolt, and the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square Deadbolt covers the square shape in a double cylinder.
22) The existing rosettes on the doors are round, not rectangular - what deadbolt matches that trim instead of the Emtek 8468?
The 8468 wears rectangular trim, so on a round-rosette door it will read as an odd one out. The Bravura 310B Elite is a Grade 2 traditional round deadbolt and the Bravura 310RC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary round deadbolt, both single cylinder cylinder x thumbturn like the 8468. The Callan 200S-G2 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with round trim. If the same door also needs a key on both sides, the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Round is a double cylinder deadbolt in a round profile.
23) The thumbturn has to be usable by a tenant with limited hand strength - is there an option with a better turn than the Emtek 8468?
The Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt built with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. It runs the same cylinder outside, thumbturn inside function as the Emtek 8468, so the keying side of the opening does not change - only the shape of the turn the tenant grips.
24) We are standardizing school doors on classroom function - which deadbolt covers that instead of the Emtek 8468?
The 8468 is a straight cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt. For classroom function, the Falcon D211 is a Grade 2 medium duty classroom deadbolt with single cylinder operation and the Falcon D111 is its Grade 1 heavy duty counterpart. The Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt on the Schlage C keyway with a 6-pin cylinder, which matters if the campus already keys to Schlage C, and the Corbin Russwin DL2211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors.
25) This is an exposed exterior door and the cylinder worries me - what deadbolt guards it better than a standard trim?
The Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard, same cylinder x thumbturn function as the Emtek 8468 but with the cylinder shrouded against attack at the face. If the opening also justifies a heavier build, the Design Hardware D1 is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, though it is double cylinder and keyed on both sides rather than turned from inside.
26) We are moving away from keys on turnover units - what electronic deadbolt takes the place of the Emtek 8468?
The 8468 is a mechanical keyed deadbolt with no electronics. For code and credential entry, the Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote, the Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel, and the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt for a credentialed property. The tradeoff is that a rekey stops being a locksmith visit and becomes a code or credential change.
27) I want the deadbolt and the knob to throw together in one motion - what does that instead of adding an Emtek 8468?
An interconnected lock does it. The Falcon H2101 is a Grade 2 entrance interconnected lock with a single cylinder deadbolt, so the inside lever retracts latch and bolt in one motion for egress rather than the two separate operations you get with a knob plus a standalone deadbolt like the 8468. It is one prep and one part number instead of a bored lockset and a separate bolt.
