Emtek 8711-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Emtek 8711 Colonial sideplate lockset fit a 1-3/8 inch interior door?
Yes. The 8711 Colonial sideplate set covers door thicknesses from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, so it works on both older 1-3/8 inch interior doors and standard 1-3/4 inch slabs. There is a door thickness field on the order so you can tell us which slab it is going on.
2) Does the Emtek 8711 need a special door prep or will it drop into an existing bored door?
It uses one standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore, the same prep a normal tubular knob or lever set uses, so on an existing bored door the bore itself is already right. What changes is the face of the door: the 9 inch sideplate covers a tall area around the bore, so any previous rosette footprint needs to sit inside that plate. Backset is 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches, both standard.
3) What backset do I order for the Emtek 8711, and how do I know which one my door has?
Backset is a required choice, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the 2-1/8 inch bore. Most residential interior doors are 2-3/8 inches; 2-3/4 inches shows up on thicker entry-weight doors and on doors prepped to a commercial standard. The 8711 latch is adjustable for both, but specify the one you need so the set arrives right.
4) Does the Emtek 8711 passage set lock?
No. It is a passage function, non-keyed, with no cylinder and no privacy turn. The knob or lever simply retracts the latch. Use it on hallways, closets, pantries and den doors. For a bedroom or bathroom you want a privacy set with a turn inside, and for an exterior door you need a keyed sideplate set instead.
5) Why does Emtek ask for handing on a passage lockset that doesn't lock?
Handing is required because the inside trim can be a lever, and a lever has to point toward the latch edge, so it is built either right hand or left hand. Stand on the outside of the door: if the hinges are on your right it is right hand. Knob choices are symmetrical, but the order still carries a handing selection, so give us the door's hand either way.
6) What comes in the box with the Emtek 8711 sideplate lockset?
It ships as a complete set: the 9 inch sideplates, your chosen knob or lever trim, the latch and the strike plate. You pick the latch faceplate style, round corner or square corner, to match what is already mortised into the door edge. Nothing else is needed to hang it on a bored door.
7) Can I mix knob and lever trim on Emtek 8711 sideplates across a house?
Yes, and that is the point of the platform. The 8711 Colonial plate accepts any Emtek brass knob or lever style, so you can run levers on the main hall doors and knobs on closets while every plate and finish stays identical. The trim list spans levers like Stuttgart, Athena, Luzern, Cortina and Rope, knobs like Round, Egg, Octagon and Victoria, and crystal knobs including Windsor and Georgetown.
8) What finishes does the Emtek Colonial 9 inch passage sideplate set come in?
Eight: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and French Antique (US7). Unlacquered brass is the one to know about, it is left bare and will patina with handling; US3 Lifetime stays bright.
9) Is the Emtek 8711 suitable for a commercial building or apartment corridor?
It is a residential-rated brass tubular set, not a commercial lockset. Fine for single-family homes, condos and high-end multi-family unit interiors where the look matters. For corridor and back-of-house doors in a commercial facility, specify a Grade 1 or Grade 2 cylindrical lockset instead; this one is not built to that duty.
10) How does the Emtek 8711 Colonial differ from the Omnia D12036A besides the keying?
Both are solid brass sideplate-style lever sets. The Emtek 8711 is a 9 inch Colonial sideplate, tubular, non-keyed passage, ordered with any Emtek brass knob or lever style, 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and a 2-1/8 inch cross bore for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Omnia D12036A is a single cylinder deadbolt lever lockset in solid brass, so its sideplate carries a deadbolt and cylinder rather than a passage latch only.
11) Is the Emtek 8711 solid brass or plated zinc?
Brass. Both the material and the substrate on the Colonial 9 inch sideplate set are brass, which is why the trim list is limited to Emtek's brass knob and lever styles and why the unlacquered option can be offered at all. Plated zinc trim cannot take a bare patina finish.
12) Do I have to specify handing on the Omnia dummy set the way I do on the Emtek 8711?
The Emtek 8711 Colonial sideplate lockset requires handing when ordered as a leverset, along with backset and the knob or lever style for the inside trim. The Omnia D12036PD is a double dummy set, meaning both plates are non-operating and it is specified by its 5-1/2 inch center to center plate spacing rather than a latch backset.
