Emtek 5150.E.US15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Emtek Egg knob dummy set require drilling the door, or does it surface mount?
No door prep needed. The Egg knob dummy set is surface mount, so it screws to the face of the door with no bore or cross-bore required. That is what makes it the right choice for a closet door, a false or inactive leaf of a French pair, or a pantry door that only needs a pull.
2) Is this Emtek dummy knob set keyed or does it latch at all?
Neither. It is a non-keyed dummy trim, so there is no cylinder, no latch, and no bolt. The knob does not turn to retract anything, it is a fixed pull. If you need the door to stay shut, pair it with a roller catch or ball catch, or order a passage or privacy function instead.
3) Is the Emtek Egg dummy sold as one knob or a pair?
It ships as a pair, one knob and rosette for each face of the door. If you only need one side, for example the inactive leaf of a French door set viewed from one room, a single dummy such as the Schlage A170 or the Omnia 434/0 egg-shaped single dummy covers that instead.
4) Will this Emtek knob work on a 1-3/8 inch interior door?
Yes. The Egg knob set covers 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch doors, which takes in both the standard 1-3/4 inch commercial or exterior leaf and the thinner 1-3/8 inch interior doors common in older homes. Emtek builds it for 1-3/4 inch as standard, so if your door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches you need to state the actual thickness when ordering.
5) Which rosette shapes can I get with the Emtek Egg knob, and are all of them offered in every finish?
Four Classic Brass rosettes: Rectangular, Regular, Rope, and #8. Finish coverage is not identical across them. Rectangular, Regular, and #8 come in all ten finishes, while the Rope rosette skips Satin Brass (US4), Polished Nickel (US14), and Flat Black (US19). If you are matching Rope trim on the rest of the house, that limits you to the remaining finishes.
6) Is this Emtek Egg knobset rated for a commercial building or apartment corridor?
It is classed residential, and no ANSI/BHMA grade is attached to it. For a corridor, school, or other high-traffic opening, go to a graded cylindrical set: the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty, and the Schlage A170 single dummy is Grade 2 heavy duty in the A Series. The Emtek Egg is for residential and light decorative use where the look drives the choice.
7) I need a knob for a door that actually latches, not a dummy. What should I order instead of the Emtek Egg dummy?
The Emtek Egg dummy is non-latching surface mount trim only. If the door needs to stay closed, an egg-shaped knob latchset is the alternative: the Omnia 434/PA is a passage latchset with the same traditional egg-shaped knob and a 3 inch projection, or the Deltana 3381 Egg Knob is an entry function set for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the Emtek Egg knob dummy set in another decorative brass line?
The Omnia 434/0 is the nearest decorative match. It is a traditional egg-shaped knob single dummy interior lockset in solid brass, the same egg knob shape and dummy function as the Emtek Egg dummy, which is also brass and dummy function. The difference in scope: the Omnia 434/0 is a single dummy, while the Emtek Egg dummy set is supplied as a pair for both faces of the door.
9) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. Can Emtek still build this?
Yes, but you have to tell us. There is a Door Thickness field on the order for exactly this, and Emtek builds the set to the thickness you enter. Leave it blank and you get the standard 1-3/4 inch build.
10) What finishes does the Emtek Egg brass knob come in?
Ten: Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), and Polished Chrome (US26). Unlacquered Brass is a living finish, it will patina with handling rather than hold its shine, which matters if you are trying to match existing lacquered brass on other doors.
11) Can I order the Emtek dummy knob in two different finishes, one per side of the door?
Yes. There is an optional Split Finish field on the order where you enter the two finishes you want, useful when a door faces a brass hallway on one side and a black or nickel room on the other.
12) Will the Emtek Egg dummy match the other Emtek knobs already on my doors?
If those doors use the Egg knob in the same finish and the same Classic Brass rosette, yes, the trim reads identically, which is the usual reason to spec a dummy from the same series for a closet or false leaf. The set is Classic Brass collection, traditional styling. Where it will not match is a different rosette shape, since Rectangular, Regular, Rope, and #8 are visibly different plates.
13) Is a Schlage A170 dummy trim a substitute for the Emtek Egg dummy pair?
Only partly. The Schlage A170 is a Grade 2 cylindrical non-keyed single dummy trim for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch, rated heavy duty, and it is commercial-style trim. The Emtek Egg dummy is a residential decorative brass set supplied as a pair, so one A170 covers one face only and the styling is the ball-knob A Series look rather than the traditional egg knob.
14) What is a simpler dummy knob option than the Emtek Egg pair for a closet or pantry door?
The Cal-Royal BA40 dummy knob from the Barrington BA series covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Bravura Biloxi dummy knobset with round trim is a Grade 2 dummy. Both are plainer round-knob dummies, whereas the Emtek Egg dummy is a traditional brass egg knob offered with rectangular, regular, rope, and #8 rosettes.
15) My door needs a privacy or keyed lock, not the Emtek Egg dummy. What matching-style alternatives exist?
The Emtek Egg set is a dummy, non-keyed. For a locking knob in a similar traditional look, the Deltana 6112 St. Thomas knob is privacy function for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Deltana 6901 Portland knob is entry function for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Baldwin Estate 5077 Bethpage knob with R027 rose is privacy function.
16) Will a Kwikset Polo passage knob work where the Emtek Egg dummy was specified?
They are not interchangeable in function. The Kwikset 200P Polo is a passage knob supplied with a 6AL latch and RCS round corner strike, so it requires bored door prep and latch and strike mortises. The Emtek Egg dummy is surface mount with no door prep required and has no latch at all.
17) What is the Emtek Egg knob actually made of?
Solid brass, both knob and rosette, which is why it takes the full range of plated and living brass finishes. Brass also means you can expect the weight and feel of a cast knob rather than a stamped or zinc one.
