Emtek Classic Brass Key In Knobset - Rope Knob with Rosette Options - Dummy (Pair)

No door prep needed. The Rope knob dummy mounts on the surface, so it screws to the face of the door with no cross bore and no latch bore. That is what makes it the go-to for a closet door, a false door on a pair, or the inactive leaf of a double door where you want the knob to match but there is no latching hardware behind it.

It ships as a pair, one knob for each face of the door. If you only need one side, say a closet door or a single inactive leaf, a single dummy is the cheaper buy: Schlage's A170 single dummy trim, the BEST 6K single dummy trim, or Omnia's 434/0 solid brass single dummy are all single-side dummies we carry.

That's the usual reason to buy it. The Rope knob and the four Classic Brass rosettes carry across Emtek's knobset line in the same seven finishes, so the closet or false door reads identically to the working doors on the same hallway. Order the same knob design, the same rosette shape, and the same finish code, and the dummy is indistinguishable from the operating sets beside it.

Not directly. A surface-mounted dummy screws to the door face and doesn't fill or use the 2-1/8 inch cross bore left by a cylindrical passage set, so you'd have an exposed hole behind the rosette. Replace a bored passage knob with another bored passage knob, something like the Dexter C2000 passage or the Corbin Russwin CK4410, both of which fit 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Use the Rope dummy where there is no bore to begin with.

The Emtek Rope knob dummy is specified for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, with thicker doors called out at order time. If the opening is a full 2 inches, knob sets rated to that thickness include the Deltana 6171 round knob entry, the Deltana 3381 egg knob entry and the Deltana 6112 St. Thomas knob privacy, all listed for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CK4310 passage lock at 1-3/8 to 2 inches. The Emtek Rope knob dummy is a non-keyed dummy-function knob set, and the commercial-line equivalents in dummy function are the Schlage A170 single dummy trim, a Grade 2 cylindrical non-keyed knob lock in the A Series, and the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim, a Grade 2 medium duty non-keyed cylindrical knob lock in the 6K Series. Both are single dummy trim, so a pair of doors or a double door needs two of them, where the Emtek Rope is sold as a pair. The Emtek is a brass knob in a traditional style with rosette choices; the Schlage and BEST are institutional trims carrying a stated ANSI grade.

A dummy knob is fixed trim with no latch, so for a door that has to stay closed you want passage function instead. In brass traditional trim, the Omnia 434/PA egg-shaped knob latchset has passage function with a 3 inch projection. The Rope knob set covered here is dummy function and non-keyed, so it takes no cylinder. For a keyed opening with a knob, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is a Grade 1 entrance/office cylindrical lock with a Global knob and a conventional cylinder for doors 1-3/8 to 2 inches, the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and on the residential side the Kwikset 400P-CP is a Grade 3 keyed entry Polo knob for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors with a round corner adjustable latch and strike.

Four rosettes: Classic Brass Rectangular, Regular, Rope, and #8. Seven finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), and French Antique (US7). All seven are offered on each of the four rosettes. Note that Unlacquered Brass is a living finish, it will patina rather than hold its shine.

It's a residential-duty set, solid brass throughout, and it carries no ANSI grade. For a rental unit, a condo, or a single-family interior it's fine. A dummy has no latch at all, so it's the wrong function for a door that has to stay closed. You'd order the matching Emtek Rope knob in a passage function for halls and closets, or a privacy function for a bed or bath. Three things: the rosette shape (Rectangular, Regular, Rope, or #8), the finish code, and the door thickness if the door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. Door thickness is a free-text field on the order, so put the actual measurement in it. Because the set is surface mounted with no bore, there's no backset or latch to specify.

Two categories get ordered by mistake. Exit device and lock trim - the Sargent 28C-KNOB knob and rose trim for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Sargent 78-2875 outside knob only with B design, and the Imperial USA ED-BKL580 knob trim storeroom function - are knob-and-rose assemblies but they mount to an exit device or lock chassis, not to a bare door. Single dummy trims such as the Schlage A170 and the BEST 6K Series dummy cover one face only. Matching within one brand family keeps the knob profile and rose consistent across an opening set. For a rated opening, specify a knob lock that states a fire rating.
