It does not lock. Passage function means the knob turns from both sides at all times, no key and no thumbturn. That is the right function for a hall, closet, laundry, or pantry door. For a bedroom or bathroom you want a privacy version with a thumbturn, and for an exterior or office door you need a keyed entrance function instead.
