Emtek 5107.SPN.RH.US19 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Emtek Spencer passage lever fit a standard pre-bored door?
Yes. The Spencer passage leverset is a tubular bored lockset that goes into standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore prep. The included latch is a 2-3/8 inch backset as standard, and you can specify 2-3/4 inch instead if your existing bore is set back further. One exception: if you pair the lever with a STRETTO rosette, that rosette needs a 1-1/4 inch diameter bore and a 2-hole door prep.
2) Does a passage lever like the Emtek Spencer lock, or is it always free to turn?
Passage function only, so it never locks. Both levers always retract the latch, with no key and no thumbturn. It is the right choice for hall, closet and pantry doors where you only want the door to stay shut. For a bedroom or bath you want a privacy set with a thumbturn instead, and for a door that needs a key you want a keyed entry set.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering an Emtek Spencer lever?
Yes. The Spencer is a handed lever, ordered Left Hand or Right Hand. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it is left hand, hinges on the right is right hand. Get this wrong and the lever points up instead of down.
4) What is the difference between the standard latch, the 28 degree latch and the CF mechanism on the Emtek Spencer set?
Three latch choices. The standard latch is the conventional Emtek tubular latch. The 28 Degree Rotation Latch reduces how far you have to swing the lever to retract the bolt, which gives the lever a shorter, lighter throw. The CF Mechanism is the one to pick if you do not want screws showing on the rosettes, and it comes with the 28 degree latch included. All three ship as a complete set with latch and strike plate.
5) The Spencer passage lever is residential - what should I use on a commercial opening that needs a graded passage lever?
The Emtek Spencer passage set is classified for residential use, so for a rated commercial corridor or closet door look at a graded cylindrical passage lever instead. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers and a fire rating, covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. The Design Hardware X75 is another Grade 1 passage lever for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 passage lever if medium duty suits the traffic.
6) I need the same Spencer look on a bedroom or bathroom door - what do I order instead of the passage set?
The Emtek Spencer passage set is non-keyed passage function with no locking, so it is not suited to a bed or bath door. In the comparable decorative lines, the Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever with 5048 rose is the privacy-function counterpart. For a door that only needs a pull with no latch at all, the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy is offered in left hand and right hand versions.
7) My doors are 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick - will the Emtek Spencer passage set work, or do I need something else?
The Emtek Spencer passage set covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors in its published specification, with a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset. If your doors run thicker than that, the Hager 2510 passage lever covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Dexter C1000 passage covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Falcon K101 passage goes to 2-1/4 inch.
8) Which passage lever should I standardize on for a fire-rated corridor door instead of the Emtek Spencer?
The Emtek Spencer passage set is a residential brass leverset. Where a fire-rated assembly is involved, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 passage cylindrical lock with a fire rating, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever lock with a fire rating for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
9) Can I match the Spencer lever to the other Emtek trim in the house?
The Spencer lever can be ordered on any of the brass rosettes: Disk, Modern, Modern Rectangular, Neos, Square or Urban Modern. Finishes run Flat Black (US19), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Chrome (US26), Lifetime Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Brass (US4), Satin Nickel (US15) and Unlacquered Brass (US3NL). There is also a split finish option if you want a different finish inside and out.
10) What is a comparable decorative brass passage lever if the Emtek Spencer style is not right?
In the same decorative residential category, the Baldwin Estate 5103 passage lever with the 5048 rose is the closest peer for a designer brass look. Bravura offers passage leversets in Grade 2 with round or square trim, including the Miramar in US4 Satin Brass, the Atlanta and the Orlando (round trim) and the Tampa (square trim). The Spencer's own draw is the contemporary styling plus the choice of six rosettes and eight finishes.
11) Does the Emtek Spencer passage set come with everything, or do I need to buy a strike and latch separately?
It ships complete. The set includes the latch and the strike plate along with both levers and the rosettes you select, so nothing else is needed for a standard pre-bored door. The latch faceplate is available with round or square corners, so match it to the mortise already cut in the door edge.
12) Is there a lower-cost passage leverset I can spec for back-of-house doors instead of the Emtek Spencer?
For openings where the solid brass Emtek Spencer is more than the door needs, the Kwikset 200BRNL RDT Breton is a Grade 3 residential passage lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset in satin nickel. The Bravura Atlanta, Orlando and Tampa passage leversets are Grade 2 residential-style options, with Tampa carrying square trim if you want to match the Spencer's Square rosette shape.
13) Can I use the Emtek Spencer passage set on a door that needs to be locked with a key?
No - the Emtek Spencer passage set is non-keyed and latches only, so it never locks. For a keyed opening in a decorative residential line, the Deltana Manchester, Morant and Linstead levers are entry function and cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. On commercial openings, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 entry lever and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt.
14) Does the Emtek Spencer passage set need to be handed like the commercial passage levers?
Yes - the Emtek Spencer passage set is ordered as left hand or right hand, so the handing has to be confirmed before the order goes in. If a non-handed lever is preferred so stock can go on any opening, the Falcon B101 Grade 2 passage lever and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock are both non-handed designs.
15) I want the Spencer lever on a door with no latch - is the passage set the right part?
No. The Emtek Spencer passage set is sold complete with a latch and strike plate, which is more than an inactive leaf or a false door needs. Dummy trim is the right call there: the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy with 5048 rose is the decorative match, while BEST 7KC single dummy trim is a Grade 2 option and BEST 9K 1DT is Grade 1 heavy duty.
16) I need keyless code entry on the opening - is there an alternative to the Emtek Spencer passage lever?
The Emtek Spencer passage set is a mechanical, non-electronic leverset with no code entry. For keyless access on a lever, the Lockey 2835 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless lever lock with passage function and ADA compliance for 1-3/16 inch to 2 inch doors, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination and passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock.
