Emtek 2174-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the passage, privacy and dummy pocket door locks?
Three functions, three jobs. Passage (model 2174) latches the door closed but has no lock, which is what you want on a closet, pantry or laundry pocket door. Privacy (2175) adds a thumbturn for a bath or bedroom. Dummy (2176) is trim only with no latch at all, used on a door that is held by something else or on the inactive side of a pair. All three carry the same 2-1/8 inch backset and 2-3/4 inch round trim, so you can mix functions through a house and keep the look identical.
2) What comes in the box with an Emtek pocket door mortise lock, and what else do I need to buy?
It ships as a complete set with the mortise lock body, the round trim, mounting screws and the strikeplate. Nothing extra to source for the lock itself. What is not included is the pocket door frame and track, so on new construction or a full replacement you still need those separately, for example the Orca Hardware PK1200 pocket door frame kit or an NGP SLAL250PD72 72 inch aluminum track rated to 250 pounds.
3) Is there a keyed entry version of the Emtek round pocket door lock?
No. Emtek's round pocket door mortise locks come in passage, privacy and dummy only, so there is no cylinder and no key on any of them. If the opening needs to be locked with a key, the Omnia 7035/A is a keyed entry pocket door lock in solid brass with modern rectangular trim. Note the trim shape changes from round to rectangular when you go that route.
4) My pocket door slab is thicker than 1-3/8 inches. What are my options?
Emtek machines to the thickness you specify, so state the actual slab thickness on the order and the round lock is built for it. If you would rather have a lock with a published thickness range, the Weslock 0577 rectangular privacy pocket door lock covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches and has an adjustable backset with a full lip strike, and the Weslock 0527 passage version covers the same 1-3/8 to 2 inch range. Both are rectangular trim rather than round.
5) I want a round pocket door lock but not a mortise lock. What else is there?
The Emtek 2-3/4 inch round pocket door lock is a true mortise lock, which means routing a pocket in the door edge for the lock case. If you would rather avoid that prep, the Orca Hardware PDLRD is a round privacy pocket door lock, and the Pamex PF2 is a round sliding door lock with a 2-3/8 inch backset for doors 1-5/16 to 1-9/16 inches thick. Watch the backset difference: the Pamex is 2-3/8 inches against Emtek's 2-1/8 inches, so the two are not interchangeable in an existing prep.
6) Will this pocket door lock drop into the prep left by my old one?
Only if the old prep matches a 2-1/8 inch backset and a 2-3/4 inch round cutout. Emtek's round pocket door lock is non-handed and ships with its own strikeplate, so the jamb side is straightforward, but the face bore is round and fixed at 2-3/4 inches. If you are pulling out a rectangular trim lock such as the Deltana SDL25 at 2-1/2 by 2-3/4 inches or an Omnia 7012/L, the round plate will not cover the old rectangular cutout. Going the other way, a rectangular replacement like the Deltana SDLA325 heavy-duty adjustable lock can hide a smaller round hole.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the Emtek 2175 round privacy pocket door lock from another brand?
The Orca Hardware PDLRD is the nearest match on shape and function: it is a round pocket door lock in privacy/bed/bath function, the same round trim and privacy function the Emtek 2175 covers. The Emtek round pocket door mortise lock uses a 2-3/4 inch round trim plate in solid brass. If round trim is the requirement, the PDLRD holds it; the Weslock 0577 privacy pocket door lock uses rectangular trim instead.
8) I need a passage pocket door lock but the round trim does not match the rest of the house - what else is there?
For passage function with squared trim, the Weslock 0527 is a rectangular passage pocket door lock with no locking, and the Deltana SDP25 is a 2-1/2 inch by 2-3/4 inch passage pocket door lock. The Omnia 7012/N is a modern rectangular passage pocket door lock that includes a mortise edge pull. The Emtek 2174 passage version carries the same 2-3/4 inch round trim as the rest of the round series, so switching brands is the way to get a non-round face in passage.
9) My pocket door is thinner than 1-3/8 inch - what privacy lock will fit?
The Pamex PF2 round sliding door lock covers a 1-5/16 inch to 1-9/16 inch door thickness range and carries a 2-3/8 inch backset; the Pamex PF1 square style sliding door lock covers the same 1-5/16 inch to 1-9/16 inch range. The Emtek round pocket door mortise lock takes a minimum door thickness of 1-3/8 inch on a 2-1/8 inch backset, so a 1-5/16 inch slab is where the Pamex range picks up.
10) Which pocket door lock handles a heavy or out-of-square door better than a fixed-backset set?
The Deltana SDLA325 is a heavy-duty pocket door lock, 3-1/4 inch by 2-1/4 inch, adjustable, in privacy/bed/bath function. The Weslock 0577 privacy and Weslock 0627 round passage pocket door locks both carry an adjustable backset with a full lip strike. The Emtek round pocket door mortise lock is built to a fixed 2-1/8 inch backset, so the adjustable-backset peers are the ones to look at when the existing mortise pocket does not land on 2-1/8 inch.
11) Do I have to order a pocket door lock left hand or right hand?
No handing needed. The Emtek round pocket door mortise locks are non-handed, so the same part works whether the door slides to the left or the right. Order by function and finish only.
12) How much does the trim stick out from the face of a pocket door?
The trim plates are 1/8 inch thick. That is the full projection off the door face, which matters on a pocket door because anything proud of the slab can catch the jamb as the door rolls into the pocket. At 1/8 inch the round plate clears normal pocket frame reveals.
13) What finishes do the Emtek round pocket door locks come in?
Seven finishes, and all seven are available in every function: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). These are Emtek's standard brass-collection finish codes, so a US15 pocket door lock matches US15 Emtek knobs, levers and hinges elsewhere in the same house. Unlacquered Brass will patina over time by design; the other six are lacquered or plated and hold their appearance.
14) Can I get a pocket door lock with a different finish inside than outside?
Yes. Split finish is an order option on the Emtek round pocket door locks, so you can run one finish on the room side and another on the hall side. Specify both finishes in the split finish field when you order. This is common when a bathroom is finished in Polished Nickel and the hallway trim is Oil Rubbed Bronze.
15) Is the Emtek round pocket door lock rated for a commercial building?
It is a residential product. The construction is solid brass in an American Classic styling, aimed at homes, condos and light multi-family interiors rather than high-traffic commercial openings. For a commercial corridor or restroom pocket door, the Rockwood 891 pocket door privacy latch is the institutional-grade alternative in the same privacy function.
16) Can I use the same pocket door lock on both leaves of a double pocket door?
Yes, and the usual way is one active and one that just closes. Run a privacy or passage round lock on the leaf that latches, and the dummy version (2176) on the other leaf so the trim matches with no latch. Because the locks are non-handed, the same part number works on the left leaf and the right leaf. If you want both leaves to pull and neither to latch, the Omnia 7012/PD is sold as a pair dummy set with a mortise edge pull.
17) What looks like a substitute for the Emtek round pocket door mortise lock but is not one?
The Orca Hardware PK1200 is a pocket door frame kit and the NGP SLAL250PD72 is a 72 inch aluminum pocket door track rated up to 250 pounds - both are the pocket and the hanging system, not the lock that goes in the door edge. The Emtek round pocket door mortise lock is the mortise lock and trim set with screws and strikeplate, mortised into the door itself. On a new pocket opening the frame kit or track and the mortise lock are both needed, not one instead of the other.
18) Which pocket door privacy lock gives an emergency release from outside the room?
The Omnia 7012/L is a modern rectangular pocket door lock with privacy function and emergency release. The Emtek 2175 privacy version is the round-trim privacy option in the same brass series, sold as a complete set. Where a bath or bedroom needs outside release for a facility or rental, the 7012/L names that feature explicitly.
19) What is a simpler alternative to a full round pocket door mortise lock set?
The Rockwood 891 is a pocket door privacy latch in privacy/bed/bath function, a latch rather than a complete trim-and-lock set. The Deltana SDL25 is a 2-1/2 inch by 2-3/4 inch privacy pocket door lock. The Emtek round pocket door mortise lock ships as a complete set with screws and strikeplate included, so where the existing trim is being kept, a latch-only part covers the mechanism without the plates.
20) I want a larger decorative pocket door plate than a 2-3/4 inch round - what is available?
The Deltana SDL60 is a 6 inch decorative pocket door lock in privacy/bed/bath function, a considerably larger face than the 2-3/4 inch round Emtek plate. The Deltana SDLA325 runs 3-1/4 inch by 2-1/4 inch, also in privacy. The Emtek round set uses a 2-3/4 inch diameter trim plate 1/8 inch thick, which is the reference point if the plate has to cover an old cutout.
21) Is the Emtek pocket door lock solid brass or plated zinc?
Solid brass, both the substrate and the material of record, and it sits in Emtek's Brass collection. That matters on a pocket door because the trim ring sits flush and gets pushed on every time someone slides the door, so a brass plate holds up where a thin plated casting dishes. It also means the Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) option ages naturally rather than wearing through a coating.
22) Where do I find the mortise prep dimensions before I rout the door?
Emtek publishes mortise lock installation instructions covering the edge prep and face cutouts, and they are worth pulling before the router comes out. The two numbers you need to set up from are the 2-1/8 inch backset and the door thickness you specified on the order, since the lock case is built to that thickness.
