Exit Security Single Door Outswing Door Bar

The Exit Security Single Door Outswing Door Bar (SB-SG) is a heavy-duty steel security bar designed to prevent unauthorized entry on single outswing doors. No door or frame preparation required — installs in 20–30 minutes with basic tools.

Sizing Your Bar

To determine the correct bar length, measure the width of your door opening and select the nearest standard size: 36", 42", or 48". The 1" square tube installs on the door face; its actual cut length equals the door width minus 2½". The 1¼" square tube spans the door and jamb.

Exit Security SB-01-0036 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Exit Security SB-SG security bar work on an inswing door?
No. The SB-SG is built for outswing doors only, and it's a single-door bar. It works by having a 1-1/4 inch square steel tube span across the door and into the jamb, held by L-bolts, so the pull of an outswing leaf loads against the jamb. On an inswing door the geometry is wrong and the bar gives you nothing. Check the swing before you order: if the door pulls toward you from the outside, it's outswing and this is the right style of bar.
2) Can I put a security bar like the SB-SG on my store's exit door during business hours?
Not while the space is occupied. The SB-SG ships with a caution decal reading "CAUTION - This door to remain unlocked during occupancy," which is the manufacturer telling you plainly that this is an after-hours device. Barricading a required exit while people are inside is an egress violation in every occupancy type. Use it when the building is closed, or when the only people inside are the ones who can lift the bar off. Apply the decal where staff will see it.
3) Do I have to cut or drill my door frame to install an Exit Security SB-SG bar?
No door or frame prep is required. Nothing gets mortised, cut, or welded, and the frame isn't machined. The bar mounts with the hardware in the box: two 5/16 inch elevator bolts, a 1/2 inch L-bolt, four 1/2 inch flange nuts and four 5/16 inch step nuts. Budget 20 to 30 minutes with an electric drill, a 5/16 inch bit, a crescent wrench, a tape measure and a pencil. That's the whole tool list, and it matters if you're a tenant or managing a leased space where you can't modify the opening much.
4) Will the SB-SG security bar mount on a hollow metal door, or is it wood only?
Both. Metal and wood outswing doors are the stated applications for the SB-SG. The mounting is through-bolted with 5/16 inch elevator bolts and step nuts rather than screwed into a substrate, which is why it handles a hollow metal leaf as well as a solid wood one. Drilling is done with a 5/16 inch bit.
5) Is the Exit Security SB-SG a replacement for a deadbolt, or is it a second layer of security?
It's a barricade bar, not a lock, and it doesn't replace your keyed hardware. Nothing in the box is keyed: you get 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch square steel tubing, a Steel Grip security component, elevator bolts, an L-bolt, flange and step nuts, end caps and a storage bracket. It's set and released from the inside, marked with a red arrow and red LIFT UP lettering, so somebody has to be in the building to put it on and take it off. Use it as closing-time reinforcement on a door that already has a lock, not as the door's only means of securing.
6) How does someone inside get the door bar off in a hurry?
You lift it. The tubing carries a red silk-screened arrow and red LIFT UP lettering so anyone standing at the door can see which way it comes off without being trained on it. Once it's off, the SB-SG stores on the wall bracket that ships with it, which keeps the bar out of the doorway instead of leaning against the wall where it becomes a trip hazard.
7) Which part of the Exit Security bar goes on the door and which goes on the jamb?
The 1 inch square tube is the door-side piece and mounts on the face of the door. The 1-1/4 inch square tube is the jamb-side piece, carries the L-bolts, and is what spans across the door and into the jamb. That's the whole principle of the SB-SG: the door-side tube gives the bar something to bear against, and the larger tube ties the leaf to the frame so the door can't be pulled or pried open from outside. Get the two reversed and the bar won't seat.
8) Can I use one Exit Security SB-SG bar across a pair of double doors?
No. The SB-SG is configured for a single outswing leaf, and it's sized off the width of one door opening in 36, 42 and 48 inch lengths. A pair of doors needs a bar that spans both leaves and picks up both jambs, which is a different configuration. For a storefront or warehouse pair, ask for the double door version rather than trying to make a single-door bar reach.
9) Do I need to buy any extra hardware to install an Exit Security door bar?
Everything that fastens the bar is in the carton: 1 inch square steel tubing, 1-1/4 inch square tubing with L-bolts, the Steel Grip security component, two 5/16 inch elevator bolts, one 1/2 inch L-bolt, four 1/2 inch flange nuts, four 5/16 inch step nuts, 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch end caps, a 1/2 inch red end cap, the storage bracket, the caution decal and an instruction sheet. What you supply is the tools, an electric drill and 5/16 inch bit, a crescent wrench, a tape measure and a pencil.
10) Will an Exit Security SB-SG bar hold up on an exterior back door that gets weather?
The bar is steel, electrostatic powder coated, and rated heavy duty. Powder coat over steel is what keeps the surface from rusting out on a rear alley or loading dock door where the bar sits in a damp frame overnight. End caps for the 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch tubing plus a 1/2 inch red end cap are in the box, so the open tube ends are closed off.

    Secure Your Space

Posted by Tony on Mar 29th 2024

The heavy-duty construction gives me peace of mind knowing my door is secure. Plus, installation was a breeze, even for a DIY newbie like myself. Just a heads up, though, it may not fit all door frames perfectly, so double-check those measurements. Overall, a solid investment for added security.
