Sta-Kon RC10-8X – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RC10-8X ring terminal accept?
The RC10-8X takes 12 to 10 AWG conductor. That is the yellow color code on Sta-Kon insulated terminals, so if you are pulling a yellow barrel out of a panel and replacing it, this is the matching gauge range. Anything smaller (16-14) needs the blue range and 22-16 needs red, so do not crimp an undersized conductor into this barrel and expect a reliable pull-out.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RC10-8X terminal UL listed, and what voltage is it rated for?
It carries UL file E9809 and is rated 600 V. That covers normal branch circuit and control panel work where inspectors want a listed termination on the conductor.
3) Is the RC10-8X barrel copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper conductor. Aluminum building wire needs a terminal listed AL/CU or AL-only; using a copper-only barrel on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
4) Ring terminal or fork terminal for a #8 terminal screw?
Use the ring, like the RC10-8X, anywhere the connection is subject to vibration or where a loosened screw could let the conductor escape (motors, control panels, equipment grounds). The ring is captive on the stud. A fork or spade terminal slides out from under a partly backed-off screw, which is why it is reserved for panels you service often and where vibration is not a factor.
5) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon RC10-8X?
Crimp it with a tool matched to the yellow 12-10 AWG nest on an insulated-terminal crimper. The color-coded die positions on a ratcheting insulated crimper exist for exactly this; using the blue 16-14 nest on a yellow barrel under-crimps it and the conductor pulls out. No tooling is supplied with the terminal.
6) Does the nylon insulation on the RC10-8X hold up better than vinyl?
The RC10-8X uses a nylon insulating sleeve rather than vinyl. Nylon resists abrasion and cut-through from the crimp tool and from being pulled through conduit or a crowded wireway, which is why it is the common choice for panel and equipment wiring over a soft vinyl sleeve.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RC10-8X made in the USA for projects with domestic sourcing requirements?
Country of origin on the RC10-8X is the United States, which is what procurement needs when a job carries a domestic content clause. The part number to put on the submittal is RC10-8X.
