1) What size hole do I drill for a Metallics JEB11 eye bolt?
The shank is 3/8 inch, so a 7/16 inch hole gives the normal clearance fit for a 3/8 bolt in wood or steel. Drilling at exactly 3/8 makes it an interference fit and you'll fight it in.
2) Is a zinc-plated steel eye bolt like the JEB11 OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The JEB11 is zinc-plated steel, which is a coating meant for dry and normally dry interior use. Zinc plating gives some corrosion resistance but it isn't stainless, so for exterior, wet, coastal, or corrosive environments you want a stainless or hot-dip galvanized eye bolt instead.
3) Is the Metallics JEB11 a forged eye bolt rated for overhead lifting?
Treat the JEB11 as a general-purpose zinc-plated fastener, not a rated rigging component. No load rating or lifting certification is carried for it, and an unrated bent-eye bolt should not be used for overhead lifting or life safety. If you are rigging a load, buy a shoulder-pattern forged eye bolt with a published working load limit.
4) How thick a member can a 3/8 x 6 eye bolt through-bolt?
With 6 inches of shank under the eye, the JEB11 will through-bolt most framing you meet on an electrical job, but usable grip depends on how much of that 6 inches is threaded for the nut. Measure your member thickness and leave enough thread exposed past it to seat the nut fully.
5) What do electricians use a 3/8 x 6 eye bolt and nut for?
It's a general-purpose anchoring and support fastener on electrical jobs: a through-bolted attachment point for guy wire, messenger or catenary wire, hanging support for conduit and cable runs, or a tie-off point on a strut or steel member.
