Falcon C646-A626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Falcon C646 SFIC core work in my existing Best or Arrow key system?
Yes. The Falcon C646/C647 small format interchangeable core is interchangeable with Best, Schlage and other SFIC cylinders, and it can be furnished master keyed into an existing Best or Arrow system when you supply the bitting list. That is the usual reason a property manager or locksmith picks these: you keep the master key system you already run and just swap the core.
2) What is the difference between the 6 pin and 7 pin version of the Falcon C646/C647 core?
The C646 is the 6-pin core and the C647 is the 7-pin, and both are orderable in every keyway offered. Pin count has to match the system you are keying into: a 7-pin masterkey system needs 7-pin cores, and a 6-pin system takes 6-pin. If you are adding to an existing SFIC system, count the pins in a core you already have before ordering.
3) Do Falcon SFIC cores come already keyed, or do I have to have them pinned?
Uncombinated is what ships. The C646/C647 cores arrive with no bitting in them, so a locksmith or an in-house key shop pins them to your system. If you want them combinated and master keyed into an existing Best or Arrow system, that has to be specified with the bitting list at order time. Keying option on record is keyed different.
4) Do I need a control key to change out a Falcon interchangeable core?
Yes, and it is the point of the system. The control key pulls the core out of the housing in seconds and the replacement drops in, so building staff can rekey a door themselves without a locksmith and without pulling the lock apart. When a key goes missing on a multi-tenant or school building, that is the difference between a same-hour fix and a service call.
5) What cylinder length is the Falcon C646/C647 SFIC core?
1-1/8 inches, classified as a mortise cylinder length. That is the standard SFIC figure-eight core dimension, so it seats in mortise cylinder housings and in SFIC rim and exit device trim housings built to take a small format core. If your housing was cut for a large format interchangeable core, this is the wrong core.
6) I need to add SFIC keying to a Falcon exit device that has no cylinder housing. What else do I have to order?
The core alone will not do it. A C646/C647 core has to go into an SFIC housing or exit device trim cut for a small format core. If the device needs a rim housing, the Arrow 16RCR-27 SFIC rim housing takes a 6 or 7 pin small format core and shares the 24/25 Series designation, so it pairs with these cores on a rim application. Order the housing and the core together.
7) Is the Arrow 16RCR-27 a replacement for a Falcon C646 core?
No - those are two different halves of the same assembly. The Falcon C646/C647 is the small format interchangeable core itself, a 6-pin or 7-pin uncombinated core with a 1-1/8 inch cylinder length that drops into a housing and pulls back out with the control key. The Arrow 16RCR-27 is an SFIC rim housing built to take a 6/7-pin core, not a core. If the existing housing on the exit device is sound and only the keying needs to change, the C646/C647 core is the part to order; if the rim housing itself is damaged or absent, the 16RCR-27 supplies the housing and still needs a core to operate. Both are catalogued against the 24/25 Series, so a rim housing and core can be ordered together for one opening.
8) My exit device will not latch - do I need a new core or a latch part?
Those are separate failures with separate parts. The Falcon C646/C647 interchangeable core governs keying only: it is a standard pin and tumbler core, supplied uncombinated and keyed different, that changes who can operate the cylinder. It does nothing for a latch that will not throw or hold. A mechanical top latch failure on a rim device is addressed by a latch component such as the Accentra 60-7010-0049-999 top latch for 7110/7120 devices, or the 60-7010-0050-999 top latch for the fire-rated 7110F. Order the core when keys are lost, stolen, or being rotated between tenants; order the latch component when the device is not securing the opening.
9) Which keyways can I order the Falcon C646/C647 core in?
Eight keyways are orderable: A, B, D, DD, E, F, G, H and N, and each one comes in either satin brass or satin chrome, 6 or 7 pin. A is the standard keyway; the others are restricted and correspond to the equivalent Best and Arrow designations, which is what lets these drop into an existing Best or Arrow system. Falcon G is the keyway profile carried on the core spec.
10) Can I get Falcon cores without the Falcon logo, or stamped for key control?
Yes on both. Beyond the standard core carrying the Falcon logo, the family includes no-logo variants (C648/C649) and Best style capping options (CB846/CB847, with CB848/CB849 as the no-logo capped versions). Cores can also be stamped for visual key control, which is what facilities running a stamped master system need so a core can be identified at the door without pulling it.
11) I want key control and cylinder dogging on the same 33A device - does an SFIC core cover that?
No, those are two orders. The Falcon C646/C647 core is a mortise-classification interchangeable core that sets the keying on a cylinder already prepped into the device or trim; it does not add a dogging feature to a device that was not built with one. Cylinder dogging on a 33 Series device is added by a kit such as the Von Duprin 040070/040071 cylinder dogging with indicator conversion kit, sold for 36 inch and 48 inch 33A devices, which is Grade 1 and not fire rated - dogging is not permitted on a fire door. On a commercial opening where both are wanted, the dogging kit supplies the mechanism and an SFIC core supplies the key control behind it.
12) Does adding electric latch retraction to an exit device change the core I order?
It does not change the core. The Falcon C646/C647 remains the same 6-pin or 7-pin uncombinated small format interchangeable core in a 1-1/8 inch length, available in keyways A, B, D, DD, E, F, G, H and N and in satin brass and satin chrome, whether or not the device has been converted to electric latch retraction. Electric retraction is handled by a separate device-level kit - the Von Duprin 040061 QEL modular conversion kit for 3-foot and 4-foot 33A, 35A, 98 and 99 devices, or the 04116 and 041166 QELX kits for AX devices. Those kits change how the latch is pulled back under power; the cylinder and its core continue to serve mechanical key access.
13) What finishes do Falcon SFIC cores come in and will they match my other hardware?
Two core finishes are orderable, US4 satin brass and US26D satin chrome, and both are available across all nine keyways in either 6 or 7 pin. US26D is the standard commercial finish and will match satin chrome or brushed stainless levers and exit devices on the rest of the openings; US4 matches satin brass trim. The visible face of the core is small, so most fleet buyers standardize on US26D.
14) Are Falcon C646/C647 cores suitable for a commercial building, or are they residential grade?
Commercial. These are specified for office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial, multi-tenant residential and government facilities, where key control and fast rekeying after turnover or a lost key matter more than anything else. For an institutional buyer standardizing a campus, the interchangeable core is what lets one master key system cover every opening while individual doors get rekeyed on the spot.
