Blackburn FBXD18 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Blackburn FBXD18 flexible braid connector used for?
The FBXD18 is a flat, flexible tin-plated copper braid jumper with two bolt holes, used to bond across a joint that moves or has to come apart: expansion joints in busway or bus duct, hinged equipment doors and covers, transformer and switchgear connections, and bonding jumpers where a solid conductor would fatigue. The braid flexes so vibration and thermal movement don't stress the terminations. It is UL and CSA Listed.
2) Is the Blackburn FBXD18 UL Listed for grounding and bonding work, and where is it made?
UL and CSA Listed, which is what an inspector or a spec on a government, healthcare or education job normally calls for on a bonding jumper. It is made in the United States, which also satisfies domestic-content requirements on federally funded work.
3) Why use a flexible braid instead of a piece of bare copper ground cable?
Two reasons. A flat braid has a large surface area for its cross section, so it handles high-frequency and fault current better than a round stranded cable of similar mass. And it flexes repeatedly without work-hardening, so it survives on moving joints, hinged panels and vibrating equipment where a solid or heavy stranded conductor would eventually crack at the lug. For a static run between two fixed points, ordinary bare copper with compression lugs is the cheaper choice; use the braid where something moves.
4) Is the FBXD18 braid tinned, and does that matter for outdoor or damp locations?
The conductor is tin-plated copper. The tin plating slows oxidation at the bolted pads, which keeps contact resistance down over time, so it holds up better than bare copper in damp, coastal or corrosive industrial air and against aluminum bus. It is still a bolted mechanical connection, so use the antioxidant compound and torque called for by the equipment manufacturer.
5) Does the FBXD18 come as a pair or a single jumper?
Single jumper. The selling unit is each, one 18 inch two-hole braid per unit, so if you are bonding both sides of an expansion joint or several hinged doors on a switchgear lineup, count the jumpers and order that quantity. Bolting hardware is separate.
