Blackburn SWC130J1304 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the 2-hole to 1-hole pad arrangement mean this braid has to be installed a particular way?
Yes, it's directional. One end lands on a two-bolt NEMA pad, the other on a single-bolt pad, so confirm which of your two terminals has which drilling before you order. If both ends of your connection are two-hole pads, the 2H-1H version won't bolt up and you need a 2-hole to 2-hole braid instead.
2) Why is the braid tin-plated instead of bare copper?
The tin plating on the copper braid resists oxidation and corrosion at the bolted pads and along the strands, which matters on a current-carrying joint where a growing oxide layer means rising resistance and heat. Tin-plated copper also mates cleanly with aluminum or plated-aluminum bus without the galvanic problems bare copper creates.
3) Should I use a flexible braid connector or a solid bus link between switchgear sections?
Use the braid where the two ends move relative to each other. Drawout breakers, transformer terminals, generator connections, and long bus runs all see thermal growth and vibration, and a rigid link transfers that load straight into the terminal pads and porcelain. The flat flexible braid absorbs it. A solid bar is the right call only where both ends are fixed and aligned and you want the mechanical stiffness. This one is a flexible flat braid, 1300A.
4) Is this braid connector made in the USA for a government or institutional spec job?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what most federal, municipal, and utility procurement specs are asking about when domestic-content language shows up in the bid documents. It's also built to IEEE / ANSI C37, 34, the standard commonly referenced for switchgear connection components.
5) Can I use a 1300A braid on a circuit rated below 1300A?
Yes. The 1300A figure is the braid's ampacity ceiling, so applying it on a 800A or 1200A bus is fine and simply leaves headroom, which also runs the joint cooler. What you cannot do is go the other way and put it on a bus carrying more than 1300A. Match the pad drilling and bolt size to your terminals as well; ampacity alone doesn't make it fit.
6) Is the Blackburn SWC130J1304 sold individually or in a pack?
Sold each. On a three-phase connection you'd order three, one per phase, plus any spares. The part number to quote is SWC130J1304.
