Blackburn SWA055A1304 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Blackburn SWA055A1304 flexible braid connector rated for, and where is it used?
The SWA055A1304 is a flat flexible braid connector made of tin-plated copper, built to IEEE/ANSI C37.34, the standard covering high-voltage air switches. Braids like this are used as flexible shunts and jumpers between switch blades, disconnects, bus sections, and equipment that moves, vibrates, or expands thermally, where a rigid bus bar or solid conductor would fatigue and crack.
2) Is the SWA055A1304 a one-hole or two-hole braid connector?
It is a 1-hole braid connector, so each terminal pad carries a single bolt hole. One-hole pads are quicker to land but do not resist rotation the way a two-hole pad does, so if your spec calls for two-hole NEMA pad drilling on the bus, this is not the part.
3) Can I use this flexible braid in place of a solid copper bus link on a disconnect switch?
That is exactly what it is for. A flexible flat braid absorbs blade rotation, vibration, and thermal expansion that would eventually crack a rigid link or loosen its bolts. Keep the braid bowed rather than stretched tight, and do not use it as a structural member, it carries current, not mechanical load.
4) Does the Blackburn SWA055A1304 come with mounting bolts or hardware?
It is sold each, as the braid assembly with its terminal pads only. Bolts, nuts, Belleville washers, and any contact compound for the bolted connection are separate, so add those to the order and torque to the switch manufacturer's pad specification.
5) Why tin-plated copper instead of bare copper for a switch braid?
Tin plating over the copper braid slows oxidation at the contact surfaces and on the strands, which keeps contact resistance stable at bolted pads and holds up better in outdoor and humid substation environments than bare copper. It also pairs more predictably with aluminum and tin-plated hardware.
6) Is this Blackburn braid connector made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States, which matters on government, utility, and Buy American funded work where domestic sourcing has to be documented on the submittal.
