Sta-Kon RA323M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RA323M female disconnect accept?
The RA323M is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded or solid copper wire, which is the red insulation color band used across most terminal lines. If your conductor is 14 AWG or larger, this barrel will not crimp down on it correctly and you want a blue (16-14 AWG) or yellow (12-10 AWG) terminal instead.
2) Is this terminal UL recognized for electrical work?
The Sta-Kon RA323M carries UL file E9809. That is the detail an institutional or MRO inspector asks for when terminations have to be documented on a panel or equipment build.
3) What is the difference between a flanged female disconnect and a plain one?
The flange on the RA323M is a funnel entry at the mouth of the receptacle that guides the male tab in and resists the terminal spreading or going on crooked. On blind connections behind a motor housing or inside a crowded control box, that flange is the reason to spec it over a non-flanged female disconnect. Electrically the two are the same connection.
4) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon RA323M terminals?
Use a crimp tool with an insulated-terminal nest sized to the red 22-16 AWG color code. A standard red/blue/yellow insulated ratcheting crimper handles it. Pliers or an uncalibrated tool will flatten the nylon body and you lose both the mechanical pull-out strength and the UL-recognized termination.
5) Is the Sta-Kon RA323M nylon or vinyl insulated, and does that matter?
Nylon, fully insulated, with a Mylar sleeve on the barrel. Nylon takes abrasion and higher temperatures better than vinyl and resists cracking when the terminal is crimped and flexed, which is why it is the usual choice for motor leads and equipment harnesses rather than general low-duty wiring.
6) What is the conductor material on the RA323M and is it plated?
The terminal body is copper, which is what gives it the conductivity and the crimp ductility you want on a repeatable mechanical termination. Copper barrels also work with standard non-insulated and insulated crimp dies for 22-16 AWG.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon RA323M made?
The RA323M is manufactured in the United States, which matters on government, municipal and institutional orders that carry domestic-sourcing language in the purchase spec.
