1) Will a GMS ICM7 mortise housing work with my Yale mortise lock?
That's what the ST cam is for. The GMS ICM7 straight mortise housing ships with a Yale (ST) cam, so it drives Yale cam-operated mortise lock bodies. If your mortise lock is a different brand, the cam is the part that has to change, not the housing body or the core, so order the housing with the cam that matches your lock body instead.
2) Does the GMS ICM7 housing come with a core, or do I need to buy the core separately?
The ICM7 is the housing only. It's the brass mortise body that threads into the lock and accepts a Best-style small format interchangeable core; the 7-pin SFIC core and its control key are separate. Plan on ordering a core keyed to your system, or pulling a core out of your existing stock, at the same time.
3) Will a 6-pin Best SFIC core fit the GMS ICM7 7-pin housing?
Yes. The ICM7 is cut for 7-pin Best-style SFIC cores, and a 6-pin core uses the same figure-eight body and the same depth, so it drops into a 7-pin housing without issue. It doesn't work the other way: a 7-pin core will not seat in a 6-pin housing. If your building is mixed, spec the 7-pin housing and you can run either.
4) Can I standardize a whole building on GMS ICM7 housings if the doors have different lock brands?
Partly, and the cam is the limit. The core, the keyway, and the keying schedule standardize across every opening, which is the expensive part of the program. The housing has to match the lock it goes into, and the ICM7 as spec'd carries the Yale (ST) cam. Openings with other mortise lock brands need the same 7-pin Best housing with that manufacturer's cam. Same core everywhere, different cam per lock brand.
5) Will the GMS ICM7 replace a Best brand SFIC mortise housing already in my Yale locks?
Yes, where the existing housing is a Best-format SFIC mortise housing with a Yale cam. The ICM7 is built to the Best small format standard, so your existing cores carry straight over and the keying schedule doesn't change. Confirm the pin count on what you're pulling out, since a 7-pin housing takes both 6- and 7-pin cores but a 6-pin one won't take a 7.
6) Why go 7-pin instead of 6-pin on a Best SFIC master key system?
Depth of masterkeying. The seventh chamber gives you another level of key control and a much larger pool of usable key changes before combinations start repeating, which is why 7-pin gets specified on schools, hospitals, and government work where the keying schedule runs deep. A 6-pin system is simpler and cheaper to key, and it's fine on a single building with a short hierarchy. Once you commit a facility to 7-pin housings, though, you keep the option to run 6-pin cores in them.
7) Can I rekey a Best SFIC mortise cylinder without taking the mortise lock out of the door?
Yes, and that's the whole reason to run SFIC. With a control key you pull the core out the face of the housing and drop a new one in, seconds per door, with the mortise lock body still in the door and the trim still on. Nothing gets disassembled. On a property with turnover, that's the difference between a rekey being a walk-through and being a lock-removal job.
8) Straight mortise housing or a rim housing for SFIC, which do I need?
It comes down to what the core has to drive. The ICM7 straight mortise housing has a threaded brass body that screws into the cylinder pocket of a mortise lock case and turns a cam, so it's what you want on a commercial mortise lockset. A rim housing has no threads and mounts through the door behind a rim exit device or rim lock, driven by a tailpiece instead of a cam. They're not interchangeable, so identify the lock first: mortise case in the door edge means mortise housing.
9) What finishes does the GMS ICM7 SFIC mortise housing come in?
Six: 605 polished brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 black, 625 polished chrome, and 626 satin chrome. On commercial work 626 satin chrome is the one that matches the bulk of existing lever and mortise trim, and 613 is the usual pick where the building is running dark bronze hardware. Match the housing to the trim it sits in, since the collar is what shows on the face of the door.
10) Is the GMS ICM7 housing brass or plated steel?
Solid brass, CNC-machined, then finished. Brass is what you want threading into a mortise case because it won't seize or corrode in the pocket the way a plated steel body can on an exterior or coastal opening, and the threads stay serviceable across repeated core swaps.
