1) What is the difference between Greenlee DTAPKIT and DTAPKITM?
Thread system. DTAPKIT is the inch/standard kit covering 6-32 through 1/4-20, and DTAPKITM is the metric kit covering M3 through M10. Both are 6-piece high-speed steel drill/tap sets with a 1/4 inch quick change hex shank. Order by the thread you actually need to cut, because the bits are not interchangeable between systems.
2) How thick a material can the Greenlee drill/tap bits thread?
Up to 10 gauge. The bits drill, tap and deburr in one pass on mild steel, copper, brass and aluminum at that thickness or less. Heavier plate or structural steel is outside what these are rated for, so for thicker stock drill and tap as separate operations with a conventional tap.
3) Will a Greenlee drill/tap bit work in a cordless drill, or do I need an impact driver?
The bits use a 1/4 inch quick change hex shank, so they chuck into a standard drill chuck and also drop into any 1/4 inch hex quick-change holder. A quick change adaptor is included in the kit. Set speed and torque to suit the material before you cut threads.
4) Can I use these to tap mounting holes in an electrical enclosure or panel?
That is one of the main uses. Sheet steel enclosures and panels fall inside the up to 10 gauge mild steel range, and the one-step action drills, taps and deburrs the hole in a single plunge so you get a clean threaded hole for a machine screw without switching tools. The back taper keeps you from stripping the thread if you push too deep.
5) What metric thread sizes and pitches are in the Greenlee DTAPKITM set?
The metric kit runs M3 through M10. Individual bits are available as replacements and carry the pitch in the designation, including DTAPM3C for M3 x 0.500, DTAPM4C for M4 x 0.700 and DTAPM5C for M5 x 0.800. If you wear out or snap one size, you replace that bit rather than the whole kit.
6) Will these drill/tap bits cut threads in stainless steel or cast iron?
No. The rated materials are mild steel, copper, brass and aluminum up to 10 gauge. Stainless and cast iron are not on that list, and the high-speed steel drill/tap geometry is not intended for them. For those materials, drill and tap conventionally with tooling rated for the alloy.
7) Do I still need to deburr or countersink after using a Greenlee drill/tap bit?
Usually not. Past the back taper the bit deburrs and countersinks the hole as part of the same plunge, so drilling, tapping and deburring all happen in one step. The split point with web thinning also starts the hole without a center punch and cuts the push force needed.
8) Can I buy a single replacement bit instead of the whole Greenlee kit?
Yes, the bits are sold individually by size, such as DTAPM3C, DTAPM4C and DTAPM5C in the metric range. That matters for MRO stock: keep the kit on the truck and reorder only the size that breaks, which is typically the smallest bit in the set.
