1) What thread sizes does the Greenlee drill/tap bit come in?
Eight thread sizes: #6-32NC, #8-32NC, #10-24NC, #10-32NF, #12-24NC, 1/4-20NC, 5/16-18NC and 3/8-16NC. The MPNs follow the thread, so DTAP10-24 is the #10-24 coarse bit and DTAP10-32 is the #10-32 fine one. Only #10 is offered in both coarse and fine, so if you are matching existing 10-32 machine screws in an enclosure, order DTAP10-32 rather than the 10-24.
2) How thick a piece of metal can a Greenlee DTAP drill/tap bit thread?
Up to 10 gauge. It is built for sheet and light plate in mild steel, copper, brass and aluminum. Thicker stock or hardened material is outside what the bit is rated to drill and tap in one pass.
3) Will this drill/tap bit fit my impact driver?
The shank is a 1/4 inch quick change hex, so it drops straight into a quick-change chuck or a standard three-jaw drill chuck. A 1/4 inch hex is the same shank profile an impact driver's collet takes.
4) Do I still need to drill a pilot hole before tapping with this bit?
No. The bit drills, taps and deburrs in one pass off a power drill, so there is no separate pilot drill and no second trip back to the hole with a hand tap. The split point with web thinning starts the hole without walking on sheet metal, and the deburr/countersink section past the tap cleans the edge as you finish.
5) Will over-drilling ruin the threads I just cut?
The bit is back tapered beyond the tap section, so pushing past the thread does not chew up what you just cut. That is the main reason to use one of these instead of running a plain twist drill and a separate tap on a battery drill.
6) Is a high-speed steel drill/tap bit good enough for stainless enclosures?
The bit is high-speed steel and rated for mild steel, copper, brass and aluminum. Stainless is not on that list, so for stainless enclosures use a purpose-made drill and tap rather than this bit.
7) Which size do I need for mounting hardware inside an electrical panel?
Panel and enclosure work usually runs on #10 and 1/4-20 machine screws, and both are covered: DTAP10-24 or DTAP10-32 for #10, DTAP1/4-20 for 1/4-20. Step up to 5/16-18 (DTAP5/16-18) or 3/8-16 (DTAP3/8-16) for heavier equipment brackets and strut-mounted gear. All of these are coarse thread apart from the #10-32 fine.
8) Does NC on these Greenlee bits mean coarse thread?
Yes. NC is coarse and NF is fine, so #12-24NC cuts a coarse 24 TPI thread while #10-32NF cuts the fine 32 TPI. Seven of the eight sizes are NC; the #10-32 is the only NF bit in the group.
