Klein Tools 70571 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What hex sizes come in the Klein Tools 70571 Grip-It ball end hex key set?
The 70571 is a 5-key SAE set covering 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch. Those are the larger end of the common SAE hex range, so if you also need the small fractional sizes for set screws (5/64 through 1/8), this set won't cover them.
2) Are these SAE or metric hex keys?
SAE (inch) sizes only, from 3/16 up to 3/8 inch. If the fasteners on your equipment are metric, this set will cam out or round the socket, so you need a metric ball end set instead.
3) Can I use these hex keys on live electrical work?
No. The Klein 70571 hex keys are not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock. Treat them as general-purpose tools and de-energize before working. For energized work you need a tool specifically rated and marked as insulated.
4) Will a ball end hex key let me reach a bolt I can't get straight onto?
That's the point of the design. The ball ends on the 70571 keys let you work at an angle rather than square to the fastener, and Klein states the ball shape allows a thicker neck diameter so torque capacity goes up while still holding operating angle. Use the square-cut straight end for final torque: those ends seat full depth in the socket for maximum contact and resist stripping.
5) How do you get leverage out of a folding hex key set like this?
The holder on the Grip-It set doubles as a handle, and each key locks in two positions, straight out or at a right angle. Straight out gives you fast spinning and reach; the right angle position turns the holder into a lever arm for breaking a fastener loose. Don't slip a pipe over it to gain more leverage, Klein warns against that.
6) Do the short keys on this set reach a recessed set screw?
Reach is limited. The keys run 1.547 to 2 inches long and pivot out of a 4.438 inch holder, so they handle surface and shallow-recess fasteners well but won't reach down a deep counterbored hole. For deep access, a long-arm individual ball end key is the better tool.
7) What are the Klein 70571 hex keys made of, and where are they made?
Heat-treated alloy steel, made in the USA. The hex-key ends are square-cut rather than chamfered, which is what gives full-depth seating in the socket and keeps the key from rounding out a fastener head under load.
8) What part number do I order for the Klein SAE Grip-It folding hex set?
Order Klein Tools 70571. That is the 5-key SAE Grip-It ball end set, yellow holder, with the 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch keys included. It ships as a complete set, not as loose keys.
