1) Does the Hager 3909 cylinder let me rekey without pulling the cylinder out of the door?
That's the whole point of the 3909. It's a small format interchangeable core (SFIC) mortise cylinder, so a control key pulls the core out of the housing and a new core drops in. The cylinder body stays mortised in the lock. For a property manager turning units or a locksmith rotating cores after a tenant move-out, that's a two minute job at the door instead of a lock teardown. Order the control keys you need with it, since they are specified separately from the operating keys.
2) What is the difference between the combinated and uncombinated core options on the Hager 3909?
Uncombinated means the core ships unpinned, with no key cuts assigned. A locksmith pins it to your existing system, which is what you want if you already run a Hager H1 master key system and need the new core to fall under it. Combinated means the core arrives pinned and keyed, ready to install out of the box, and it comes keyed different, meaning its key won't operate any other lock in your building unless you have it rekeyed. Small landlords and MRO buyers replacing a single door usually want combinated. Anyone with a keying schedule wants uncombinated.
3) Will a Hager 3909 core work in my existing SFIC locks and my current keys?
Two things have to line up. First, the housing has to be a small format interchangeable core prep, the figure-8 core cavity, not a large format or conventional mortise cylinder. Second, the keyway has to match: the 3909 is cut for the Hager H1 keyway, so an H1 key operates it and a different keyway family will not enter it at all. If your building is already standardized on Hager H1, the core drops into any SFIC housing you have. If your existing cores are on another manufacturer's keyway, order the uncombinated version and have your locksmith pin it, and understand your current keys still won't fit the H1 keyway.
4) Is the Hager 3909 a 6-pin or 7-pin core?
Seven pin. That matters more than it sounds: a 7-pin SFIC core will not operate on a 6-pin key, and 6-pin and 7-pin systems are not mixed casually within one master key schedule. If your facility is already running 7-pin Hager H1, this slots in. If your existing cores are 6-pin, talk to whoever maintains your keying schedule before adding this to the system. The extra pin chamber is also what gives you more usable key changes in a large master keyed building, which is why institutional and multi-family systems tend to be specified 7-pin.
5) How many keys come with the Hager 3909 core?
Two key blanks are included with the core. Control keys are separate and you have to state how many you need when you order, so if the crew that services the building needs three or four control keys to pull cores, call that out on the purchase order. Note that blanks are not the same as cut operating keys for a job, so if you're keying up a run of doors, plan additional blanks for the tenants or staff who need them.
6) Is a mortise cylinder like the Hager 3909 the right choice, or do I need a rim cylinder?
It depends on what the cylinder threads into. A mortise cylinder threads into a mortise lock case or into cylinder-prepped trim, and drives the lock through a cam. 7) Can I order Hager 3909 cores keyed alike so one key opens a whole floor?
As supplied, the combinated cores are keyed different, meaning each one gets its own key. To run keyed alike or under a master, take the uncombinated cores and have them pinned to your schedule. That's the normal workflow on an SFIC job: the cores come blank, your locksmith or the keying desk pins them to the system, and you keep spares on the shelf pinned to whatever change key that opening needs. It's also why buildings standardize on SFIC in the first place, since the pinning happens off the door.
8) What finish does the Hager 3909 SFIC mortise cylinder come in?
626 satin chrome, on both the combinated and uncombinated cores. That's the standard commercial finish and it's what the vast majority of Grade 1 commercial lever locks, exit device trim and mortise locks are supplied in, so the core face will match the rest of the hardware on a typical office, school or healthcare opening. If your openings are brass or oil rubbed bronze, the visible core face will read silver against them.
9) Is the Hager 3909 rated for commercial use or is it a residential grade cylinder?
