1) Will the Hager 5108 hold open arm work on a fire rated door?
No. The 5108 hold open arm is not for fire rated openings. It holds the door open by friction, so it will not release the door when the alarm sounds, and a fire door has to be free to self-close and latch. On a fire rated opening use a standard non-hold-open arm for the 5100 Series closer, or an electromagnetic hold open tied to the fire alarm.
2) Do I have to specify handing when I order the Hager 5108 arm?
Yes, handing is part of the order. The 5108 is a handed parallel arm and is built left hand or right hand, so a left hand arm will not work on a right hand opening. Stand outside the door (the side it swings away from) and note which side the hinges are on to get it right.
3) Is the Hager 5108 a parallel arm or a regular arm mount?
Parallel arm. The 5108 mounts on the pull side of the door with the closer body on the door face and the arm running back parallel to the door to a soffit shoe on the frame. If your 5100 closer is set up regular arm on the pull side, or top jamb on the push side, this arm is the wrong mounting style for that installation.
4) Should I use a friction hold open arm or an electromagnetic hold open on a commercial door?
A friction arm like the 5108 is the simple choice for a door you want to prop open on purpose, for a loading area, a classroom during change of periods, a mail room. Nothing to wire, and the user sets and breaks the hold by hand at the door. Go electromagnetic instead when the opening is fire rated or smoke rated, or when the hold has to drop automatically on an alarm signal. The 5108 will not do that and is not for fire rated openings.
5) Can I add hold open to an existing Hager 5100 closer without replacing the whole closer?
Yes, that is what the 5108 is for. The closer body stays on the door and you swap only the arm assembly, so a 5100 that currently runs a standard parallel arm becomes a hold open unit. Order it in the handing of that door and the finish that matches the closer body already installed.
6) What finishes does the Hager 5108 hold open arm come in?
Three: aluminum, black, and dark bronze, and each of them is stocked in both left hand and right hand. If you are matching arms across a building, the aluminum reads closest to a standard 689 painted closer and dark bronze to a 690, so pick against the closer bodies already hanging rather than against the door.
