1) Will the Hager 5400-MLT closer work on a push side or pull side install?
Both. The 5400-MLT ships as a tri-pack, so the same closer covers regular arm (pull side), top jamb, and parallel arm (push side) mounting. The standard package includes the 5900 parallel arm bracket, so you are not ordering a separate bracket to go push side. One thing to know: the 15 percent power adjustment built into the standard arm applies to regular and top jamb mount.
2) Do I have to order the Hager 5400 closer handed for a left hand door?
No handing to specify. The 5400-MLT is non-handed, so one closer covers left and right hand openings. That is what makes it workable as a fleet standard across a building where the doors swing both ways, and it means you can stock one part number instead of two.
3) Can I use the Hager 5400 surface closer on a fire rated door?
Yes. The 5400-MLT is UL/cUL Listed for up to 3 hours, UL10C positive pressure rated and UL10B neutral pressure rated. That covers the usual fire door assembly requirements on corridor and stair openings up to a 3 hour label.
4) Will the Hager 5400-MLT fit a 1-3/8 inch door or a 2-1/4 inch door?
Standard configuration is built for a 1-3/4 inch (44 mm) door, which is the thickness the included 5902 sex nut and bolt screw pack is sized for. Doors from 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch (36 mm to 57 mm) are handled as an option, so if your opening is off standard thickness you need to call that out when ordering rather than assuming the standard pack fits.
5) Do I need to change the hinges when I add a Hager 5400 door closer?
Hager recommends anti-friction or ball bearing hinges with its closers. Plain bearing butts drag once a closer is loading the door, which shortens hinge life and makes it harder to hold the opening force down for ADA compliance. On a retrofit where the door is still on standard plain bearing hinges, budget the hinge swap into the same job.
6) Is a Grade 2 closer like the Hager 5400 enough for a busy commercial entrance?
The 5400-MLT is built for light duty commercial work: offices, interior corridors, restrooms, back of house doors in a multi-family or retail building. For a high traffic main entrance taking constant public use, a heavier duty Grade 1 closer is the better call. Hager states this one for light duty commercial applications, so match it to the traffic honestly rather than to the door size alone.
7) What fasteners come with the Hager 5400-MLT, and do I need sex bolts for a wood door?
Both fastener types are standard in the box: self reaming self tapping wood and machine screws, plus sex nuts and bolts. The 5902 sex nut and bolt pack included is sized for a 1-3/4 inch door. On a hollow core or lighter wood door, through bolting with the sex nuts is what keeps the closer from pulling out of the face.
8) What finishes does the Hager 5400-MLT surface closer come in?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum painted, 693 sprayed black, and 695 sprayed dark bronze. The 689 is the usual match for aluminum storefront and clear anodized frames, 695 for dark bronze storefront, and 693 where the frames and hardware are painted black. The closer body is aluminum alloy. A plastic cover is available as an option if you want the arm hardware concealed.
