Hager HAG-780-112HD-83-CLR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What applications is the Hager 780-112HD continuous geared hinge designed for?
The 780-112HD is a heavy-duty concealed leaf continuous hinge for high-traffic commercial doors. It handles frequent use applications like office buildings, hospitals, and schools where durability is critical.
2) What door weights and sizes can this hinge support?
This heavy-duty model supports substantial door weights typical of commercial installations. Verify exact weight capacity and door dimensions with manufacturer specifications for your specific application.
3) How do I determine the correct handing for this hinge?
Stand on the side where the door swings away from you. If hinges are on the right, order right-hand. If on the left, order left-hand. The 780-112HD is available in both configurations.
4) What finish options are available for the 780-112HD?
Hager continuous hinges typically come in multiple finishes including satin chrome, dark bronze, and others. Check the specific finish designation in the part number for this model.
5) What makes this a "geared" continuous hinge?
Geared hinges have interlocking gear teeth that distribute weight evenly along the hinge length. This provides smoother operation and longer life compared to standard continuous hinges, especially on heavy doors.
6) Does this hinge meet building code requirements?
Hager continuous hinges are designed for commercial code compliance. Verify specific code requirements with your local authority having jurisdiction, as requirements vary by application and location.
7) What installation template should I use?
Use Hager's specific template for the 780 series. The concealed leaf design requires precise mortising. Always verify template compatibility with your exact model and door thickness before cutting.
8) How do I cut this hinge to the correct door height?
Continuous hinges are field-cut to door height. Use a fine-tooth hacksaw or metal cutting saw. File cut edges smooth and ensure gear teeth align properly after cutting for smooth operation.
9) What maintenance does this hinge require?
Clean debris from gear teeth periodically. Apply light machine oil to the hinge pin and gear mechanism annually or as needed. Avoid heavy grease which can collect dirt.
10) Are there other models in the Hager 780 series?
Yes, the 780 series includes various duty ratings and configurations. The HD designation indicates heavy-duty. Standard duty and other variations are available for different applications.
11) Can this hinge work with door closers?
Yes, continuous hinges work well with door closers. The continuous support helps handle the additional stress from closer operation. Ensure proper closer sizing for your door weight and width.
12) What tools are needed for installation?
You'll need a router for mortising, drill with appropriate bits, hacksaw for cutting to length, file for finishing cut edges, and standard hand tools. Precise mortising is critical for proper operation.
