1) What is the difference between the Halo H99ICAT and H99RTAT 4 inch housings?
Both are 4 inch Halo Air-Tite housings, and the difference is insulation contact. The ICAT models (H99ICAT, H995RICAT) are the IC-rated builds you use where blown-in or batt insulation will sit directly against and over the can. The RTAT is the non-IC build, which needs insulation held back from the housing. On a remodel where you are cutting into an existing insulated ceiling and cannot control what is up there, order the IC version.
2) Can I install the Halo H99 4 inch housing in a finished ceiling without opening the drywall?
Yes, the remodel version is built for that. You cut a 4 inch hole in the existing ceiling, push the housing up through it, and the mounting clips grip the drywall from above, so no attic access and no joist mounting are needed. Order the Remodel installation type. If the ceiling is still open and you are working off the joists before drywall, take the New Construction option instead.
3) Will the Halo 4 inch Air-Tite housing work on a 277 volt commercial circuit?
It is rated 120-277V, so it takes standard 120V residential branch circuits and the 277V leg common in commercial and multi-tenant buildings. That is one housing you can standardize on across a mixed portfolio instead of stocking separate 120V and 277V cans.
4) Can the Halo 4 inch Air-Tite housing go in a covered porch, soffit, or bathroom shower?
Indoor only. The housing is rated for indoor installation locations, so it is not the part for an exterior soffit, an open porch, or any damp or wet location. For those you want a housing specifically listed wet or damp location.
5) Does the Halo H99 housing come with a trim, or do I order that separately?
The H99 is the housing only, the can and its mounting frame that goes into the ceiling. The finish is raw, unpainted metal because it is meant to be hidden above the ceiling line. The visible part, the trim or the baffle and the lamp itself, is a separate order, and you pick a 4 inch trim to match the housing aperture. Budget one trim per can when you are pricing a job.
6) Is the Halo H99 recessed can airtight for an energy code ceiling?
Airtight construction is what the Air-Tite designation means: the housing is sealed to stop conditioned air leaking from the room into the attic or plenum through the can opening.
