1) Can I use the HALO RA56 in a 3-inch or 4-inch recessed can?
No. Sized for 5-inch and 6-inch housings, it will not seat in a 3-inch or 4-inch can. Halo publishes different output steps for the smaller apertures, 600/900 lumens at 4 inch and 500 lumens at 3 inch, and those are separate modules. Measure the aperture, not the trim ring, before ordering, because a 6-inch trim on a 5-inch can is common in older buildings.
2) Can the HALO RA56 be installed in a shower, over a tub, or under a covered porch?
Yes, it is rated for damp and wet locations, which covers shower trims, tub surrounds, covered entries, and soffits. That is also why it holds up in laundry rooms, pool enclosures, and unconditioned garages. The 50,000 hour rated life is quoted for those same damp or wet conditions, not just for dry interior use.
3) What dimmer works with the HALO RA56 LED retrofit, and how low will it actually go?
It needs a phase cut dimmer, leading edge or trailing edge, on a 120V circuit. With a compatible one it dims to 5 percent. It will not work on a 0-10V or DALI control, so if the space is on a low-voltage dimming system this is the wrong module. At 0.07A draw per fixture, a standard residential phase cut dimmer will carry a large number of them on one circuit, which is usually the opposite of the problem people had with incandescent cans.
4) What color temperature is the HALO RA56, and will it match the warm cans already in the building?
5000K, a cool daylight white. It will not match 2700K or 3000K trims sitting next to it, and mixing them in the same room or corridor is visible. If the rest of the building is warm white, either relamp the whole space to 5000K or specify a warm version instead. 5000K reads correctly in garages, back-of-house, mechanical rooms, and task areas.
5) Do I need to replace the recessed housing to install the HALO RA56, or does it go into what is already in the ceiling?
It goes into the existing 5-inch or 6-inch can. That is the point of a retrofit module: the housing stays in the ceiling, the old lamp and trim come out, and the LED module goes in as a single sealed unit with its own trim in matte white. No ceiling patching, no attic access, no new rough-in, which is what makes it workable in an occupied unit or a tenant space you cannot shut down.
6) How much power does the HALO RA56 draw, and what does it save over the BR30 lamps it replaces?
8.8W at 120V, drawing 0.07A. That is the full fixture load, driver included, since the retrofit module carries its own driver.
