Halo H35ICAT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What's the difference between the Halo H35RICAT and the H35ICAT 3 inch housings?
Both are 3 inch Halo shallow IC air-tight housings, and the difference is how they go into the ceiling. The H35ICAT is a new construction housing, so it mounts to joists before the ceiling goes up. The H35RICAT is a remodel housing, made to drop into a hole cut in an existing finished ceiling. Same 3 inch aperture, same air-tight IC construction. If the drywall is already up, order the remodel version.
2) Can Halo IC air-tight recessed housings be buried in ceiling insulation?
Yes. The IC rating on the Halo shallow housings means they can sit in direct contact with building insulation, so you don't have to hold insulation back or build a box around them in an insulated attic or ceiling. The air-tight construction is the other half of that: it limits air leakage from the conditioned space up into the cavity, which is what energy codes are after on ceiling penetrations.
3) Will a Halo shallow recessed housing fit in a ceiling with limited plenum depth?
That's what the shallow profile is for. These Halo housings use a compact depth so they go into ceiling cavities that won't take a standard-depth can, which is the usual problem in a remodel over a duct run, under a floor above, or in a low-clearance soffit. Available in 3 inch and 5 inch apertures.
4) Do I need a separate LED trim and driver, or does the Halo H25ICAT housing include the light?
The H25ICAT and its siblings are recessed housings, meaning the can and its wiring compartment. That's the rough-in half of the job. You still specify the LED trim or module separately, matched to the 3 inch or 5 inch aperture you ordered and to the 7.5W, 120V line voltage rating of the housing. Order the housings at rough-in and the trims at finish.
5) Can Halo IC air-tight housings be used outdoors or in a covered porch ceiling?
No. These Halo shallow housings are rated for indoor installation only. For a soffit, porch ceiling, or anywhere exposed to weather or damp conditions, you need a housing rated for that location instead.
6) How many Halo 7.5W recessed housings can I put on one 120V circuit?
Each one draws 0.078A at 120V, so the load per fixture is very small. On a 15A branch circuit, the 80 percent continuous-load limit is 12A, which is far more than a normal run of these will ever approach. In practice the number of cans on the circuit is decided by your layout and switching, not by the fixture load.
7) Are these Halo recessed housings line voltage or do they need a low voltage transformer?
Line voltage. The housings run at 120V straight off the branch circuit, so there's no remote transformer to find a place for and no low voltage secondary to run. That's part of why they suit retrofit work in an occupied building, where you're feeding the can from the existing switched circuit.
8) Which size Halo shallow housing should I use, the 3 inch or the 5 inch?
The 3 inch aperture is the smaller, tighter beam footprint, used where you want the ceiling to read clean and the fixtures to disappear, or where framing and cavity space are tight. The 5 inch gives a larger aperture and a broader wash, which is the more common choice for general ambient lighting in offices, corridors, and living space. Both carry the same 7.5W, 120V IC air-tight construction. Note that the 5 inch comes as a new construction housing (H25ICAT); if you're cutting into a finished ceiling, the remodel option is the 3 inch H35RICAT.
9) Are Halo shallow IC housings suitable for apartment and multi-family ceilings between units?
They're a common fit for multi-family and commercial interiors: air-tight construction cuts air transfer through the ceiling penetration, and the IC rating means the insulation in the assembly can stay continuous over the can. The shallow depth also helps in the tight cavity you usually get between a unit ceiling and the floor above. For a fire-rated floor-ceiling assembly, the rated enclosure requirement is set by the assembly listing, so confirm what your assembly calls for before you cut.
