Sta-Kon RCS10-250AX – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RCS10-250AX female disconnect take?
It is sized for 12-10 AWG stranded wire, which is why the insulation is yellow. Yellow is the standard color code for the 12-10 AWG range on insulated terminals, so you can sort it from the red (22-16) and blue (16-14) barrels in the same bin by sight.
2) Will this disconnect fit a 1/4 inch male tab?
Yes. The RCS10-250AX is a .250 series female disconnect, meaning it slides onto a 1/4 inch wide blade terminal, the common tab size on contactors, relays, motor terminals and appliance switches. It will not mate with .187 or .110 tabs.
3) What makes a heat shrink disconnect different from a standard nylon one?
The barrel on this Sta-Kon is a heat shrinkable fully insulated female disconnect: after you crimp, you heat the sleeve and it shrinks down tight over the conductor and jacket. A standard nylon or vinyl disconnect just crimps and leaves the wire entry open. Use the heat shrink version where the connection sees moisture, washdown, vibration or outdoor exposure. For a dry panel interior, an ordinary insulated .250 disconnect does the same electrical job without the heat gun step.
4) Do I need a special crimp tool for the RCS10-250AX?
Crimp it with a tool set up for insulated terminals in the 12-10 AWG range, not a bare-terminal die, and not pliers. The insulated-barrel nest supports the nylon sleeve while it compresses the brass. After crimping, apply heat evenly around the sleeve until it has pulled down onto the wire jacket.
5) What is the terminal itself made of, and is it plated?
The contact is brass, with the insulation sleeve in nylon/polyamide. Brass is the usual barrel material for crimp disconnects in general purpose control and appliance wiring.
6) Is the Sta-Kon RCS10-250AX made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States. That matters on government, institutional and utility work where domestic sourcing is a condition of the purchase order.
7) I am standardizing a maintenance kit across my buildings. Where does this Sta-Kon part fit?
Think of it as the heavy end of a .250 quick-disconnect kit: this one covers 12-10 AWG and is the yellow barrel. To cover a full panel or motor-control cart you would also stock the smaller ranges on the same .250 tab, plus male disconnects where you need both halves of the connection. Keeping one series throughout means one crimp tool and consistent color coding for your techs.
