1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RCS10-14X ring terminal crimp onto?
The RCS10-14X takes 12 to 10 AWG stranded copper wire. The yellow insulation is the color code for that gauge range, so if you are pulling 14 or 16 AWG you need the blue-barrel size instead, not this one.
2) Will this Sta-Kon ring terminal fit a 1/4 inch stud or screw?
Yes. The RCS10-14X is a 1/4 inch ring, so it drops over a 1/4-20 stud, a 1/4 inch terminal block screw, or a 1/4 inch ground lug bolt. For a #10 or 5/16 stud you need a different ring size in the same series.
3) What is the difference between a heat shrink ring terminal and a standard vinyl or nylon insulated one?
The RCS10-14X has a heat shrinkable insulating sleeve over the barrel. After you crimp it, you heat the sleeve and it shrinks down onto the wire jacket, sealing the termination against moisture, dirt and vibration-driven wire pullout. A standard vinyl or nylon barrel just covers the crimp and leaves the wire entry open. Use the heat shrink type outdoors, in wash-down areas, on rooftop equipment, in pump and irrigation boxes, or anywhere condensation reaches the connection. For a dry indoor panel, a plain insulated ring terminal does the same electrical job.
4) What voltage can I use these heat shrink ring terminals on?
Rated 600 V, which covers standard commercial and industrial branch circuits, control panel wiring, motor leads and lighting feeds.
5) Do I need a special crimper for the RCS10-14X, and what else does the job take?
Crimp it with a standard insulated-terminal crimp tool set for the 12-10 AWG (yellow) die position. Because it is the heat shrink style, you also need a heat gun to shrink the sleeve down after crimping, a lighter or torch will scorch it. No hardware is supplied with the terminal, the 1/4 inch stud, nut or screw comes from the equipment you are landing on.
6) Is the barrel on this Sta-Kon terminal copper or aluminum?
Copper. That means it is for copper conductors, not aluminum, use a listed AL/CU connector if you are terminating aluminum wire.
7) Can I use a ring terminal like this where the connection may be disconnected often?
A ring terminal is the closed-loop type, it has to come off the stud entirely, so the nut or screw must be removed to disconnect. If a tech needs to pull leads frequently for testing, a spade or flanged fork terminal in the same 12-10 AWG size slides out from under a loosened screw instead. For permanent grounds, motor leads and anything subject to vibration, the ring is the one you want because it cannot shake off a loose screw.
