HES 5000C 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an HES 5000C electric strike work with my cylindrical lockset, and how much latchbolt throw can it take?
The 5000C takes a cylindrical latchbolt with a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch throw. At the full 5/8 inch you need a 1/8 inch gap between the door and the jamb so the keeper clears the bolt. It is non-handed, so one part covers left hand and right hand openings and you do not specify swing when you order. It is a latchbolt strike only. A mortise lock with a deadbolt, or a separate deadbolt above the lockset, needs a strike built for that bolt instead.
2) How much depth do I need behind the jamb for an HES 5000C strike?
Strike body depth on the 5000C is 1-1/16 inches, which is the number to check against your jamb before you cut. That is what puts it into shallow openings where a deeper strike body will not physically go. Frame application is metal and wood. For aluminum frames, the 501A and 502 faceplates include universal mounting tabs.
3) Do I have to order the HES 5000C as fail safe or fail secure?
Neither. Fail secure and fail safe are field selectable on the 5000C, so the installer sets the mode at the door rather than you picking it on the order. Fail secure keeps the keeper locked when power drops and you still get out with the inside lever. Fail safe releases the keeper on power loss, which is what a lot of stairwell and egress schemes call for. One note that decides the wiring: the 5000C is DC continuous duty and AC intermittent duty only. A fail safe install holds power all day, so it has to run on DC.
4) Can I put an HES 5000C on a labeled fire door?
No. The 5000C carries no fire rating, so it does not belong in a labeled fire door assembly. A fire opening needs a fire rated electric strike, which is always a fail secure unit with no dogging or hold-open in the release path. If the opening is not labeled, the 5000C is fine on it.
5) Will an HES 5000C release if the door is being pushed against the strike?
Not reliably. The 5000C is not preload capable, so if the latchbolt is loaded against the keeper the solenoid may not pull. That happens more than people expect: stack pressure in a stairwell, a closer holding the door tight, compressed weatherstripping, or a door that has settled out of square. If the opening has any of that, either fix the pressure on the door or specify a preload rated strike. On a normally hung door with the latch sitting free in the keeper, the 5000C releases fine.
6) Which faceplate do I order with a 5000 series electric strike for my frame?
Five faceplates cover the 5000 series and the frame decides it. The 501 is 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches with square corners and a flat face, for ANSI metal jambs. The 501A is the same 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches with radius corners and mounting tabs for aluminum frames. The 502 is 7-15/16 by 1-7/16 inches, also aluminum. The 503 is 6-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches. The 504 is 10 by 1-3/8 inches with four point mounting for wood. All five carry ANSI/BHMA numbers E09321, E09322 and E09323. Measure the existing cutout before you choose, since a longer plate is often what lets you cover an old prep.
7) What power supply do I need to run an HES 5000C, and how much current does it draw?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, set in the field. Draw is .24 amps at 12 volts and .12 amps at 24 volts, so size the supply from the higher figure if you are running several strikes off one board. Duty rating is DC continuous, AC intermittent only, which means anything energized for long stretches has to be on DC. The strike lands on a plug-in connector, so it disconnects at the frame without cutting wire.
8) What is the difference between an HES 5000C Complete Pac and buying the strike on its own?
The Complete Pac is the 5000 series strike boxed as one solution rather than a strike body you then have to spec a faceplate and trim for. A trim enhancer is included. One thing to know before you order: while the 5000 series is made in 630 satin stainless, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 bronze toned, 629 bright stainless and BLK black, the Complete Pacs come in 630 only. If the opening has to match brass or black hardware, the Complete Pac will not get you there.
9) What does the LBM option add on an HES 5000C, and do I need it?
LBM is a latchbolt monitor. It reports whether the latch is actually thrown into the keeper, which is a different signal from a door position switch that only tells you the door is closed against the frame. Order the LBM version when the access control system or the alarm panel has to know the opening is secured, not just shut. There are two ways to buy the Complete Pac: the plain strike pac, or the LBM pac with the monitor built in. It is not a field add-on, so decide before you order.
10) The strike lip on my frame does not reach far enough to catch the door. What do I add to a 5000 series strike?
Stackable lip extensions handle it. Three press fit sizes are made for the 5000: the 5104-1/2 at 1/2 inch, the 5104-1 at 1 inch, and the 5104-1-1/4 at 1-1/4 inches. They press on and stack, so you can build out to what the opening needs. This is the usual fix on a deep frame reveal or where the door face sits proud of the jamb face and the standard lip leaves the latch short.
11) Is an HES 5000C strong enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
Static strength is 1,500 pounds and dynamic strength is 70 ft-lbs, and the body is stainless steel with an internally mounted solenoid and a tamper resistant design. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 1034 burglary resistant listed, plus UL 294 listed for access control use. In practice the keeper pin locking design means the frame, the door and the lockset give out before the strike does, so on a busy tenant entrance or a corridor door the weak link is usually the rest of the opening.
12) Can an HES 5000C electric strike be used on an exterior door?
Yes on outdoor exposure. The 5000 is UL 1034 listed as burglary resistant and suitable for outdoor use, so a perimeter entry, a gate house door or a service entrance is within what it is listed for. Two limits worth knowing before you spec it: it carries no windstorm rating, so it is not the part for an opening that has to meet a windstorm assembly spec, and it is not preload capable, which matters on exterior doors where wind loading or a heavy closer can push the latch against the keeper.
13) My electric strike buzzes on AC power. What do I add to a 5000 series to quiet it or to signal a release?
A 5000 series strike running on AC buzzes by design, and the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier is the fix. It converts the AC feed to DC at the strike, which stops the buzz and puts the unit on its continuous duty rating instead of intermittent. If you want the buzz kept as an audible release cue, the 2006M plug-in buzzer does that on purpose. Two more plug-in options: the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter for connector based wiring into an access control head end, and the 2005M3 SMART Pac III for surge and voltage handling.
14) I am retrofitting an HES 5000 into an existing metal frame. Is there a template for cutting the prep?
The HESCUT-MTK metal template kit is made for it and is what you want if you are cutting a hollow metal jamb in place rather than working on a new frame at the shop. Pair it with the right faceplate for the frame: the 501 for ANSI metal jambs, the 503 at 6-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches, or the 504 at 10 by 1-3/8 inches if you need to cover a longer or damaged existing cutout. Strike body depth is 1-1/16 inches, so confirm you have that much clear behind the jamb before you start cutting.
15) Can I standardize on one HES 5000C part across doors that swing different ways in my building?
Yes. The 5000C is non-handed, so the same unit goes on a left hand and a right hand opening with no separate part number, and fail secure versus fail safe is selected in the field rather than baked into the order. That means one stocked item covers a mixed set of doors, and a maintenance tech can set the mode per opening. What does change door to door is the faceplate, since that follows the frame type, and the lip extension if the reveal is deep.
