HES 5200C 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 5200C electric strike work with my existing cylindrical lockset?
The 5200C is built for cylindrical latchbolt locks and takes a 5/8 inch to 3/4 inch latchbolt, with the 3/4 inch throw needing a 1/8 inch door gap to clear. You keep the lockset, lever and cylinder you already have; the strike replaces the keeper in the frame and releases the latch on a signal from the access control side. It is a latchbolt keeper only, so it will not hold or release a deadbolt. If the opening is secured by a mortise deadbolt or an exit device latch rather than a cylindrical latchbolt, this is not the strike for it.
2) Is the HES 5200 fail safe or fail secure, and what happens to the door when the power drops?
Either one, and it is set in the field rather than ordered as separate part numbers. Fail secure keeps the door locked from the outside when power is lost, which is the normal setting on exterior, tenant and stair doors. Fail safe releases the strike on power loss, which is what you want when the opening has to free up on a fire alarm or a system failure. Egress is unaffected in both settings, since the inside lever retracts the latch mechanically no matter what the strike is doing. One thing to weigh on fail safe: the strike is energized whenever the door is locked, so it needs to be run on DC, which is the continuous duty side of its rating.
3) Will the HES 5200 still release if the door is under pressure from a closer or wind?
No. The 5200 is not preload rated. When a closer, wind load, stack pressure in a stairwell or a door that has settled pushes the latchbolt sideways into the keeper, a strike without a preload rating can bind and fail to release when it is energized. For an opening like that, specify a strike rated for preload. On a door that hangs free and closes without the latch fighting the keeper, the 5200 is a sound choice and carries 1,500 lbs of static strength and 70 ft-lbs of dynamic strength once it is locked.
4) The latch on my door does not line up with the strike cutout. Can the HES 5200 be adjusted after it is installed?
Horizontally, yes, and that is the point of the 5200 design. The in-frame horizontal adjustment lets the installer shift the strike opening to meet the latchbolt after the body is already mounted in the frame, so a prep that sits slightly off from where the lock actually lands does not mean pulling the strike back out. Two numbers to check before you cut: the frame needs 1-1/16 inches of depth behind the face for the strike body, and a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt needs a 1/8 inch gap between door and frame to clear the keeper. If you are prepping a metal frame, the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit is the matching cutting template.
5) Can I put an HES 5200 electric strike on a fire rated door?
No. The 5200 carries no fire rating, so it does not belong in a labeled fire door opening, where the hardware has to hold the assembly's label and the door has to positively latch. For a rated opening you need a strike specifically listed for fire doors, in fail secure. Everywhere else the 5200 is a full commercial specification part: Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.31, UL 294 listed for access control, and UL 1034 listed for burglary resistance.
6) Will the 5200C go into a wood frame, or is it hollow metal jambs only?
Metal and wood frames are both covered, and the faceplate is what follows the frame. The 501 is a 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch flat plate with square corners for ANSI metal jambs. The 501A is the same 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 size with radius corners and universal mounting tabs for aluminum frames, and the 502 at 7-15/16 by 1-7/16 does the same job on a longer plate. The 503 measures 6-7/8 by 1-1/4 with radius corners and universal tabs. For wood, the 504 at 10 by 1-3/8 uses four point mounting to spread the load. Whichever plate you use, the frame has to give up 1-1/16 inches of depth for the strike body.
7) What comes in the HES 5200C Complete Pac, and do I order the faceplate separately?
Everything for a standard install ships in one box: the strike body, faceplate and mounting hardware together, plus the trim enhancer, and the wiring lands on a plug-in connector instead of loose leads. The faceplate supplied with the pac is the 4-7/8 inch. Worth knowing when you are matching the rest of the hardware on the opening: the Complete Pac is built in 630 satin stainless only. The 5200 strike itself is offered in 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 bronze toned, 629 bright stainless and black as well, but those finishes are on the strike rather than the one box pac.
8) What is the difference between the LBM and LBSM versions of the HES 5200C?
Monitoring, and it is decided at order time. The plain Complete Pac gives you the strike with no monitoring output. LBM adds a latchbolt monitor, so the panel sees whether the latchbolt is actually projected into the keeper, which is how you tell a latched door from one that is merely resting closed. LBSM is the latchbolt strike monitor, reporting the latchbolt plus the strike keeper position, so the system also knows when the strike itself has been released. If the door is on an access control system where you need real door position and secure status, order the monitored version up front rather than the base pac.
9) What power supply does the HES 5200 need, and can I run it on AC?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 volts, AC or DC. Current draw is .24 amps at 12 volts and .12 amps at 24, so moving a multi-door job to 24 volts cuts the load per strike in half when you are sizing the supply and the wire run. AC is intermittent duty only, meaning momentary release, the buzz-in type of use. Anything continuously energized, including any fail safe setup where the strike is powered the whole time the door is locked, has to be on DC. Where the only supply available is AC and you need continuous duty, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier converts it at the strike.
10) Can the HES 5200C be used on an exterior door?
Outdoor use is covered. The 5200 is UL 1034 burglary resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, the body is stainless steel, the solenoid is mounted internally where it cannot be reached, and the unit is tamper resistant. It is not windstorm rated, so it should not be specified into an opening that has to carry a windborne debris or hurricane assembly rating. Watch the preload point too: exterior doors with a strong closer or steady wind pressure on them are exactly where a non preload strike gets into trouble.
11) My frame has a deep reveal and the strike lip will not reach the door. Is there a lip extension for the HES 5200?
Three press fit lip extensions are made for it: the 5204-1/2 at 1/2 inch, the 5204-1 at 1 inch and the 5204-1-1/4 at 1-1/4 inch. They stack, so a combination gets you past what any single extension covers when the door sits well back from the strike face. They are ordered separately from the Complete Pac, so measure the reveal before the crew is on site rather than after.
12) Does the HES 5200 meet a Grade 1 spec for a commercial or institutional building?
Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.31, with UL 294 listing for access control and UL 1034 for burglary resistance. The numbers behind the grade: 1,500 lbs static strength and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, a stainless steel body, tamper resistant construction and an internally mounted solenoid rather than an external one. It is specified as a commercial product, not a residential one. The gap to check against your standard is fire: the 5200 carries no fire rating, so a facility standardizing on one strike across both rated and non rated openings needs a second part number for the labeled doors.
13) Do I need to specify a hand for the HES 5200 electric strike?
Non-handed, so there is no left or right to get wrong and one part number covers doors swinging either way. That matters if you are standardizing across a building or keeping spares on the shelf, since one strike serves every opening regardless of swing. What you do specify is the monitoring option, base pac, LBM or LBSM, and the faceplate that suits the frame.
14) How does the HES 5200 wire into an access control panel, and what accessories are made for it?
Wiring is a plug-in connector at the strike rather than loose leads to splice. Accessories that plug into it: the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter for ElectroLynx quick connect harnesses, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier for AC supplies, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer where the opening needs an audible signal on release. Add the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit if you are cutting the frame prep yourself.
