HES 610-LM – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES 610 cabinet lock fit inside a shallow drawer?
The 610 body is 1-3/4 inches high, 25/32 inch wide and 13/32 inch deep, so it eats almost none of the drawer box. It can be installed at the side of the cabinet or at the front, and that second option is what gets it into shallow drawers where there is no room behind the face. Same part for drawers and for cabinet doors.
2) Does the HES 610 cabinet lock stay locked or release when the power drops?
Either one, and you set it in the field rather than specifying it when you order. The 610 is field selectable between fail secure and fail safe, so the same lock can hold a records cabinet closed through an outage or drop open for egress-adjacent or emergency-access cabinets. Fail secure keeps the lock engaged with no power applied; fail safe releases it. One part number covers both, which matters if you are buying a batch before the AHJ or the facility decides which way each cabinet has to behave.
3) What voltage does the HES 610 cabinet lock run on, and does it take batteries?
It is a hard-wired, dual voltage lock: 12 or 24 VDC, or 12 or 24 VAC. No batteries, so there is nothing to change out on a fleet of cabinets, but every lock needs a cable run back to a power source. If you already have a 12 or 24 volt supply feeding door hardware in the building, the 610 lands on it without a separate transformer.
4) How much current does an HES 610 draw, so I can size a power supply for a bank of cabinets?
Draw depends on how you feed it: 260 mA at 12 VDC, 130 mA at 24 VDC, 140 mA at 12 VAC, and 70 mA at 24 VAC. Running the cabinets at 24 volts instead of 12 halves the load per lock, which is usually the difference between one supply covering a full casework run and needing a second. Multiply the figure for your voltage by the lock count and add your headroom.
5) Can I tie a cabinet lock into my existing access control system, or does it need its own keypad?
Both work with the HES 610. It can be triggered by a simple relay off an access control panel, so the cabinet falls under the same credentials and audit as the doors, or it can be driven by a stand-alone keypad where there is no panel to reach. That relay-triggered approach is what makes it practical for narcotics cabinets, tool cribs, evidence drawers and IT casework that need to follow the same card population as the room they sit in.
6) What is the difference between the HES 610 and the 610 LM?
Monitoring. The standard 610 locks and releases but reports nothing back. The LM version adds locked state monitoring, so the panel gets a contact confirming the lock is actually secured rather than just that it was commanded to secure. The monitored contact is rated 25 V / 1 A. If a compliance record has to show a cabinet was closed and locked, or a supervisor needs to see an open drawer on the head end, order the LM. If the lock is just holding casework shut, the standard model does that job. It is the one decision to make on the order form, since the two are otherwise the same lock.
7) Can the HES 610 be used in an outdoor cabinet or a wash-down area?
No. The 610 is IP20 rated and specified for indoor use, so it has no protection against water or wash-down and does not belong in an exterior enclosure, a kitchen line that gets hosed, or an unconditioned yard cabinet. Operating range is 14 to 104 degrees F (-10 to 40 degrees C), which also rules out an unheated garage or mechanical space that swings colder than that. For exterior or wet locations you need a sealed enclosure or a lock rated for the environment.
8) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the HES 610 cabinet lock?
No handing to specify. The 610 is non-handed, and it installs at either the side or the front of the cabinet, so the same lock covers left-hinged doors, right-hinged doors and drawers. For anyone stocking spares across a building, that means one line item rather than a hand-specific pair.
9) Is the HES 610 built for commercial cabinets or is it a residential-grade lock?
Commercial. For an opening a person walks through you need door-rated hardware, an electric strike or an electrified lockset. Use the 610 where the electronic access has to follow the contents into the millwork.
11) Can I standardize one cabinet lock across a whole facility with mixed casework?
That is where the HES 610 does its best work. It is non-handed, mounts at either the side or the front, and covers both drawers and cabinet doors, so the millwork variation across a building does not fragment the order.
