1) What happens to an HES 660 cabinet lock when the power goes out?
It stays locked. The HES 660 is a fail secure lock, so cutting power leaves the cabinet, locker or display case secured instead of releasing it. That is the behavior you want on evidence storage, controlled substance cabinets and anything that has to stay shut in an outage. It also means you need a mechanical way in when the power is down, and HES offers the KO key override accessory for the 660 for exactly that. If your application calls for the door to free itself on power loss, a fail secure lock is the wrong choice and you want a fail safe device.
2) How much current does the HES 660 draw, and what size power supply do I need for a bank of lockers?
Figure 240 mA per lock at 12 VDC, or 120 mA per lock at 24 VDC, on continuous duty. The preload version is much hungrier: 700 mA at 12 VDC or 350 mA at 24 VDC. Multiply by the number of doors on the supply and add headroom. The lock accepts 12 or 24 VDC with a plus or minus 10 percent tolerance, and going with 24 volts halves the current per opening, which is what you want when one supply feeds a long row of lockers and the cable runs are lengthy enough for voltage drop to matter. Voltage is picked at order time, so decide before you buy: the 660 is offered as a 12V or a 24V unit, not a field selectable one.
3) Does the HES 660 have to be mortised into the cabinet door, and how much room does it take up?
No cutting into the door. The 660 is a surface mounted lock, so it fastens to the cabinet body and the keeper to the door with no mortise prep. The body is 3-3/8 inches high by 2-5/16 inches wide with a 1-7/8 inch depth, and it uses adjustable mounting brackets with a final lockdown feature, so you set the alignment to the keeper first and then fix the position permanently. When you are laying out a shallow display case or a thin locker, plan for that 1-7/8 inch depth plus room for the 6 foot cable lead leaving the body.
4) What is the difference between the HES 660 and the 660 LBSM version?
LBSM adds locked state monitoring. The base 660 is a lock and nothing more, it gives the panel no feedback about whether the cabinet actually secured. The LBSM version reports the locked state back through a monitored contact rated 25 V / 1 A, which is what you land on an access control input, an alarm panel or a building management system. Order LBSM anywhere you have to prove a cabinet was closed and locked rather than left ajar: evidence rooms, pharmacy carts, server cabinets, anything with an audit requirement. If the cabinet is simply a controlled door and nobody is watching its status, the plain 660 does the job.
5) Can the HES 660 be used on an outdoor cabinet or in an unheated storage building?
No, this one is indoor only. The 660 is IP20 rated, which is protection against fingers and solid objects and no protection at all against water, and the operating range is 14 to 104 degrees F (-10 to 40 C). An exterior enclosure, a loading dock cabinet exposed to weather, or an unheated northern warehouse that drops below 14 degrees F all fall outside what this lock is built for. For a conditioned interior space, lockers, display cases, casework and cabinets inside a building, it is in range.
6) Does the HES 660 cabinet lock run on batteries, or do I have to pull wire to every cabinet?
Wire is required. The 660 is a hard wired lock with no battery option, and each unit comes with a 6 foot cable lead that you extend back to a low voltage power source. Practically, that means a homerun to every cabinet plus a 12 or 24 VDC supply sized for the total load, which is straightforward on a new casework install or a locker bank on one wall, and a real cost on scattered cabinets in a finished building. If you cannot get power to the cabinet, look at a standalone battery powered cabinet lock instead, because there is no way to run this one off cells.
7) What does the preload option on the HES 660 do, and do I need it?
Preload is about releasing under load. On a gasketed door, a packed locker or a cabinet that has settled slightly out of square, there is pressure bearing on the lock when you energize it, and a lock without preload release can bind instead of opening. The 660 preload option is rated for up to 15 lbs of that load and still releases cleanly. The trade is current: preload units pull 700 mA at 12 VDC or 350 mA at 24 VDC against 240 mA and 120 mA for the standard versions, so size the supply for it. It can be ordered as preload alone, or as LBSM-Preload, which gives you locked state monitoring and preload release in one unit.
8) Is the HES 660 strong enough for an evidence locker or a secured tool crib?
Static holding force is 1,000 lbs and dynamic strength is over 100 ft-lbs, in an all metal body rated Grade 1. Those two numbers cover different attacks: the 1,000 lbs is steady pull on the door, the 100 ft-lbs figure is impact, someone hitting or yanking the door rather than leaning on it. For lockers, evidence storage, tool cribs and display cases in corporate and government facilities, that is a commercial duty lock rather than a cabinet latch. Note it is a commercial rated product and it is a surface mounted electric lock, so the cabinet itself and the keeper mounting have to be substantial enough to be worth the holding force.
9) What do I have to specify when ordering an HES 660 cabinet lock?
Two choices settle it. First the model: plain 660 with no monitoring and no preload, LBSM for locked state monitoring, Preload for release under up to 15 lbs of load, or LBSM-Preload for both. Second the voltage, 12V or 24V, since each model is built for one or the other. The lock ships as a complete, pre-assembled unit, so there is no faceplate or keeper to configure separately. It has no backset, no strike prep and no lever trim, and the body is 3-3/8 by 2-5/16 by 1-7/8 inches mounted to the cabinet frame with adjustable brackets. For a passage or entry door on an access control system you want an electric strike or an electrified lockset, not this. Where the 660 earns its place is the cabinet inside that room: narcotics storage, key cabinets, IT enclosures, evidence lockers and merchandise cases.
