HES SMB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the HES SMB be used on a fire rated door opening?
No. The SMB surface mounting box is not fire rated. For a labeled opening you need hardware carrying the rating, so the SMB should be kept to non-rated doors.
2) What is the surface mounting box for a Cal-Royal 8600 series electric strike?
Use the Cal-Royal 8641-SM, a single gang surface mount box built for the 8600 series. The HES SMB is the surface mounting box on the HES side and is made for the 7000 (783S and 789S), 9400, 9500, 9600 and 9700 series electric strikes, so pair each box with its own strike line rather than crossing them.
3) Is the Securitron SAM surface mount kit the same thing as an HES SMB?
No. The Securitron SAM Surface Mount Kit Accessories belong to the SAM accessory line, and the Securitron SWB is the SAM wood bracket for that same line. The HES SMB is a surface mounting box for HES electric strikes, used on the inactive door of a pair of doors to accommodate rim exit devices. The names both read as surface mount hardware, but they serve different mounted products and are not interchangeable.
4) Is the HES SMB mounting box Buy American Act compliant for a government job?
Yes. The SMB is BAA qualified and made in the USA, which is what a federal or public agency spec typically needs to see before it goes on the submittal. HES is an Assa Abloy brand.
5) Is the HES SMB rated for commercial traffic or is it a residential part?
Commercial. The SMB surface mounting box is a Grade 1 commercial electric strike accessory, so it's specified for the same duty level as the strikes it houses on institutional and multi-family openings.
6) Is the HES SMB a powered device or just a housing?
It's a housing. The SMB is an installation accessory that gives the electric strike a surface mounted enclosure; the electrical work, voltage and wiring all belong to the strike itself. Order it alongside the strike, not instead of one.
7) Do I need a template kit as well as the SMB when installing an HES strike?
Only if you're cutting a jamb prep, which the SMB avoids. HES sells two template kits: the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit for the 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 strikes in 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations, and the 9000-MTK metal template installation kit. If the strike is going into the SMB box on the door leaf, the template kit isn't part of that job.
8) What else should I add to an HES electric strike order besides the mounting box?
Depends what the opening needs. HES offers the 150 stainless steel edge cover in 626 finish for the lock and strike, the 152 for mounting inside hollow metal, wood and aluminum jambs, the 157 Torx screws and the 157D tamper-resistant Torx R20 insert bit, and the 2007M with 4 inch wire leads. On the power side, the 2001-1 converts AC to unfiltered DC rated 35V 2 Amp and the 2001M does the same at 35V 1 Amp with a MOV and self-resettable fuse, though neither is recommended for the 1006 strike. The 2006M adds an audible operation indicator at 24VDC, 75dB at 11-3/4 inches, and the 2004M adapts existing HES strikes to ElectroLynx connectors.
9) What surface mount accessories are there for a maglock instead of an electric strike?
The SMB is strike hardware only, so it won't help on a magnetic lock. For surface mount work on a Securitron mag, the SAM Surface Mount Kit accessories cover it, and the SWB SAM wood bracket handles wood door and frame conditions. Securitron also has a glass door accessory line if the opening is all-glass rather than a hollow metal or wood pair.
10) What do I use on an all glass door instead of a surface mount strike box?
Look at Securitron Glass Door Accessories, which are the Glass Door Series hardware for that opening and carry a Grade 2 rating. The HES SMB is a Grade 1 surface mounting box for HES electric strikes and is intended for the inactive leaf of a pair of doors running rim exit devices, which is a different opening condition than a glass door.
11) I need to convert an existing exit device to signal request to exit. Does the HES SMB do that?
No. The HES SMB is a surface mounting box, an installation accessory that houses an HES electric strike on the door. For request to exit signalling from an exit device, the field installable kits are the Command Access CRSREXKIT-ED for Cal Royal 22/98 and Sargent 80 series with an SPDT switch, and the CYREXKIT-ED for Corbin 5000 and Yale 7000 exit devices rated 5A.
12) Is there only one version of the HES SMB, or do I have to pick a size or finish?
