The HES 9600 Series electric strike is a windstorm rated, surface mounted electric strike designed to accommodate rim exit devices with a 3/4" throw latch. All components are completely encased within its 3/4" thick stainless steel housing. No cutting on the frame is required for installation. Simply place the electric strike on the surface of the frame, align it with the exit latchbolt and install. The outdoor rated HES 9600 door strike is field selectable for fail secure and fail safe operation, and for 12 or 24VDC.

HES 9600 630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES 9600 electric strike work with my rim exit device?
Rim exit devices are exactly what the 9600 is built around. It accepts a Pullman latchbolt with up to a 3/4 inch throw, so if your device throws a Pullman latch of that size or smaller it will seat in the keeper. The strike is non-handed, so left hand and right hand openings take the same part and you can stock one unit for a whole building. The base gives you horizontal adjustment to line the keeper up with the latch once the device is hung. What it will not take is a mortise lock latch or a cylindrical lockset latch. Those need a strike prepped for that lock body, not a rim exit strike.
2) Do I have to cut or mortise the frame to install the HES 9600 strike?
No cutting on the frame. The 9600 sets on the face of the frame: place it, align it with the exit device latchbolt, fasten it down. It installs in metal frames and wood frames. Allow for what it adds at the opening, because the housing stands 3/4 inch deep off the frame face, with a 9 inch faceplate and a width of 1-3/4 inches. That surface mount approach is why it gets used on retrofits and on grouted or filled hollow metal frames where getting inside the frame is not realistic.
3) Is the HES 9600 fire rated? Can I use it on a labeled fire door?
It is not fire rated, so keep it off labeled fire door assemblies. A fire opening needs a strike that carries its own fire label, and the 9600's listings run to burglary and access control instead: UL 1034 burglary-resistant, UL 294, UL 305, and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. Where it does belong is exterior and security openings, including storm-rated ones. For a fire rated opening, specify an electric strike with a fire label that matches the rim exit device you are using.
4) Will the HES 9600 release if the door is under pressure from a closer, gasketing or wind load?
Not preload rated. If the latchbolt is being pushed hard against the keeper by stack pressure, compressed weatherstripping, a wind load on the leaf or a closer holding the door tight, the 9600 is not the strike for that condition. Openings that see steady side load on the latch need a preload capable strike. On a normally hung door where the latch sits free in the pocket it operates without a problem, and once latched the assembly is rated at 2,000 lb static and 120 ft-lb dynamic strength.
5) Can the HES 9600 electric strike go on an exterior door or a hurricane-zone opening?
Outdoor use is covered outright. The 9600 is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, with every component encased in a stainless steel housing. For storm work it is listed to ANSI 250.13-2003 Severe Windstorm and holds Florida Building Code approval FL#14307, which is the number a coastal spec usually calls for by name. It is also UL 294 and UL 305 listed and rated ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1.
6) Do I order the HES 9600 as fail safe or fail secure, and do I have to pick 12V or 24V?
Neither one is a separate part number. Fail safe and fail secure are both selectable in the field on the same unit, and so is 12 or 24VDC, so one strike covers all four combinations and it can be re-set later if the access control scheme changes. The base and cover separate for those adjustments. What you do have to decide at order time is the finish and whether you want a latchbolt monitor, because the 9600 ships as a complete, pre-assembled unit.
7) How much current does the HES 9600 draw, and what do I need to power it?
Continuous duty draw is .45 amps at 12VDC and .25 amps at 24VDC. Running the strike at 24V roughly halves the load, which matters when several strikes share one supply or the wire run is long. It needs DC either way. HES lists a 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier for it, along with the 2005M3 SMART Pac III and the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, and a 2006M plug-in buzzer where the door needs an audible release cue.
8) Should I use a surface mounted electric strike like the HES 9600, or a mortised electric strike?
It comes down to the frame and the lock. Go surface mounted when you cannot open up the frame: retrofit work, grouted hollow metal, a storm-rated frame you do not want to modify. The 9600 fastens to the frame face with no cutting, in metal or wood, and the housing projects 3/4 inch with a 9 inch faceplate. A mortised strike sits flush and looks cleaner, but it wants a cutout in the frame. The other deciding factor is the hardware on the door. The 9600 only serves rim exit devices with a Pullman latch up to 3/4 inch throw. If the door has a mortise lock or a cylindrical lockset, a surface mount rim strike is not an option at all.
9) Is the HES 9600 heavy duty enough for a main entrance or a high-traffic building?
The numbers on the 9600 are 2,000 lb static strength, 120 ft-lb dynamic strength and 1,000,000 cycles of endurance, at ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, the top commercial grade for electric strikes. Construction is stainless steel with the solenoid mounted internally and tamper resistant hardware, so nothing on the frame face gives an attacker something to work on. That is a spec set for lobby doors, stairwells and multi-family entrances rather than a light interior office opening.
10) What is the difference between the HES 9600 LBM and LBSM, and can I add monitoring later?
LBM is the latchbolt monitor build and LBSM is the latchbolt strike monitor build; the standard 9600 comes with no monitoring. Choose it on the order. The strike is supplied complete and pre-assembled, so a monitor is not something you retrofit into a plain unit in the field. All three builds are offered across the full finish range, so a job that mixes monitored access controlled doors with unmonitored ones still runs a single finish through the building.
11) I need the electric strike to match the exit devices already on my building. What finishes does the HES 9600 come in?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel, and BSP black suede powder. Each of those is available in the standard build, the LBM latchbolt monitor build and the LBSM latchbolt strike monitor build. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for commercial exit devices and pulls; 613 and 613E are the ones to look at against dark bronze door hardware.
