1) What kinds of locks does the Trine EN960 strike work with?
Mortise exit devices, mortise locks without deadbolts, and cylindrical locksets with up to 7/8 inch latch throw. It is sized on a 1/8 inch door gap. A mortise lock with a deadbolt will not work, because the strike only releases the latch.
2) Can I use an electric strike on an exterior door or a gate?
The EN960 is one of the few strikes rated for it. It carries UL 1034 Indoor/Outdoor Burglary Resistant listing, which is what makes it usable on gates and exposed exterior openings where a standard indoor strike would fail. Trine lists it as outdoor rated.
3) Is the Trine EN960 approved for a fire rated door assembly?
Yes. UL 10C listed, Class A, 3 hour, single swing door. It is also BHMA A156.31 2001 Grade 1 and holds NYC MEA 79-01-E approval. Note the 3 hour rating is stated for a single swing door, not a pair.
4) Do I have to order the Trine EN960 fail safe or fail secure, or can I change it in the field?
On DC units, fail safe and fail secure are field reversible, so the same strike can be flipped on site. Ordering is still done by fail safe or fail secure, and by voltage: 12VAC, 12VDC, 24VAC or 24VDC. If you want the field reversible behavior, spec a DC unit. AC units also buzz when energized; DC runs silent.
5) Can the EN960 go into a wood jamb, or is it hollow metal only?
Both. Trine lists the EN960 for new or replacement installations in metal or wood jambs. If your opening is an aluminum storefront jamb instead, this is the wrong body, look at an Adams Rite 7100 or 7170 series strike sized 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches for that application.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Trine EN960 for a 310-2 style 9 inch by 1-3/8 inch jamb cutout?
The Trine EN960 is built to drop into the Folger Adam 310-2 cutout with a 9 inch faceplate, so the nearest family is the HES Folger Adam 310 line itself - the 310-1(X) electric strike body is a Grade 1, fire rated 310 Series unit for 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch throw latchbolts. The Rockwood ESK-DBL is also a 310-1 Series Grade 1 fire rated strike, built for double doors with a 3/4 inch keeper. The EN960 itself accepts mortise exit devices, mortise locks without deadbolts and cylindrical locksets up to 7/8 inch throw on a 1/8 inch door gap.
7) I need an electric strike for an exterior gate - is the Trine EN960 the right choice or is there another outdoor option?
The Trine EN960 is outdoor rated and UL 1034 listed indoor/outdoor burglary resistant, which is why it is often specified for gates. If you want a purpose-built gate strike instead, the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is an outdoor rated electric gate strike, though it is not fire rated. The EN960 carries UL 10C fire rating for a Class A 3-hour single swing door in addition to the outdoor listing, so it is the one to use when the opening is both exterior and rated.
8) What looks like a substitute for the Trine EN960 but will not work on a fire rated opening?
Several strikes share the general electric strike form but are not fire rated: the RCI 15BS economy strike for special offset latch entry is fail-secure only and not fire rated, the Adams Rite 7100, 7160 and 7170 are not fire rated, and the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 pac for surface vertical rods is Grade 1 but not fire rated. The Trine EN960 is UL 10C listed for a Class A 3-hour single swing door, so on a labeled opening none of those are a swap for it.
9) Does handing matter when ordering the Trine EN960 strike?
It is ordered left hand or right hand, but handing is field reversible, so a unit on the shelf can be converted rather than returned. Useful if you stock strikes for a mixed building.
10) How much current does the Trine EN960 draw, and can it run continuous duty?
12VDC draws 0.280A at 43 ohms and 24VDC draws 0.150A at 164 ohms, both rated intermittent or continuous duty. The AC versions, 12VAC at 0.700A and 24VAC at 0.370A, are intermittent duty only. Size your power supply off the DC figures if the strike will be held energized, as on a fail safe application.
11) Will the EN960 hold up on a high traffic entrance?
It is UL tested at 2,000+ lbs static strength and rated for 1,000,000+ cycles, with a one piece locking mechanism driven by a single solenoid. That cycle count is the reason it gets specified on main entries and multi-family lobby doors rather than an economy strike.
12) What are the alternatives to the Trine EN960 if I need latchbolt monitoring?
The EN960 does not offer a monitoring option. Those are different frame preps, so confirm the cutout before switching.
