Trine 4801-32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What voltage does the 4801 strike need, and do I have to order a specific one?
You don't pick a voltage. The 4801's built-in electronics accept anything from 11 through 28 volts, AC or DC, automatically, with surge and kickback protection. Current draw runs 0.566 A pull-in / 0.217 A holding at 12VDC, 0.253/0.099 at 24VDC, 0.509/0.181 at 12VAC, 0.405/0.149 at 16VAC, and 0.215/0.087 at 24VAC. Continuous duty rated and silent on all of them, so no buzz on an AC supply.
2) Is the Trine 4801 fail-safe or fail-secure?
Either. It's field selectable, so one part covers both. Set it fail-secure and the door stays locked when power drops; set it fail-safe and it releases on power loss, which is what egress-side and stairwell applications usually call for. Check your local code for which one the opening requires before you set it.
3) What is the LB option on the Trine 4801 and do I need it?
LB is active latchbolt monitoring. Order the Yes version and the strike reports whether the bolt is actually thrown into it, which is what an access control panel or alarm system needs to confirm the door is secured rather than just powered. If you are only releasing the door from a reader or a button with no door status reporting, the No version is all you need. It is an ordering choice, not something you add later.
4) How does the Trine 4801 compare to the HES 9700 for a Squarebolt door?
Both are Grade 1 surface mounted strikes made for Corbin Russwin SecureBolt and Yale SquareBolt exit devices, so either one addresses the same opening. The difference that usually decides it: the HES 9700 is fire rated and the Trine 4801 is not. On a non-rated opening, the 4801 gives you field-selectable fail-safe/fail-secure and automatic 11 to 28 volt AC or DC input, so you don't have to match the strike to your power supply.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Trine 4801 electric strike for a Yale SquareBolt exit device?
The HES 9700 Series is the direct counterpart. Both are surface mounted electric strikes built specifically for the Corbin Russwin SecureBolt and Yale SquareBolt exit devices, and both are Grade 1. The Trine 4801 has a 9 inch face plate, accepts 11 through 28 volts AC or DC with built-in voltage regulation, and is field selectable fail-safe or fail-secure. Choose based on which of those electrical and faceplate details match the opening you are working on.
6) What finishes does the Trine 4801 strike come in so it matches my other frames?
Seven: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, plus black and dark bronze powder coat. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for commercial aluminum and hollow metal openings; the powder coats are the ones to pick against a painted dark frame. All seven are available with or without latchbolt monitoring.
7) Can the Trine 4801 go on an exterior door?
It isn't outdoor rated, so plan on an interior opening or a fully protected exterior one under cover. For a weather-exposed door, use a strike rated for outdoor service instead.
8) Is this strike strong enough for a high-traffic commercial entrance?
It's a Grade 1 strike, the heaviest ANSI/BHMA duty level, and it's a commercial product rather than a residential one. The locking mechanism is one piece driven by a single solenoid, which is fewer moving parts to fail on a door that cycles all day.
9) Will a standard rim exit device electric strike work in place of the Trine 4801?
No. A general rim exit device strike is cut for a Pullman type latch and will not accept the square deadlocking bolt used by the Yale SquareBolt and Corbin Russwin SecureBolt. Only strikes prepped for those bolts will work - the Trine 4801 and the HES 9700 Series are both built for that specific bolt, in a surface mounted Grade 1 body.
10) If I already stock HES 9700 strikes, what does the Trine 4801 give me that is different?
Both cover the same SecureBolt and SquareBolt openings at Grade 1.
