The HES 9700 Series is a heavy duty, surface mounted electric strike designed to accommodate Corbin Russwin SecureBolt™ and Yale SquareBolt® exit devices. All components are completely encased within its 3/4" thick stainless steel housing. No cutting on the frame is required for installation. The HES 9700 is outdoor-rated, field selectable for fail secure and fail safe operation, and for 12 or 24VDC.

HES 9 700 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to cut the frame to install a HES 9700 surface mounted electric strike?
No frame cutting is required. The 9700 mounts to the surface of the frame with all components encased in a 3/4 inch thick stainless steel housing, and it works on both metal and wood frames. That is what makes it a realistic retrofit on an existing opening, including a fire-rated frame, since it complies with NFPA 80-07 guidelines for retrofit into fire-rated frames. A surface mounting box (SMB) is available if you need one, along with a 9000-MTK metal template kit for layout.
2) Can the HES 9700 be set for fail safe or do I have to order the fail secure version?
One part covers both. Fail safe and fail secure are field selectable on the 9700, so you set the mode at install rather than specifying it on the order. Same for voltage: it is field selectable for 12 or 24VDC. One caution for a fire door, though, the UL 10C 3 hour fire rating applies to fail secure operation only. Set it fail safe and you give up that listing on a rated opening.
3) Will the HES 9700 release if the door is under preload from a closer or wind pressure?
No. The 9700 is not preload capable, so it needs the bolt free of side pressure to release. On an exterior door that stacks up against the frame in wind, or a door pulled tight by an oversprung closer, plan on relieving that load, otherwise the strike will not open on a valid credential even though everything is wired correctly. This is the most common false service call on surface strikes.
4) Is the HES 9700 approved for use on a fire-rated door assembly?
Fire rated, and the listings back it up: UL 10C fire-rated to 3 hours in fail secure operation, plus CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformance, and California Fire Marshall listing. It is also UL 294 and UL 306 listed and RoHS compliant. Remember the 3 hour fire rating is fail secure only, so a fire door application locks the mode choice for you.
5) I have a standard rim panic device, not a SecureBolt or SquareBolt. Is the HES 9700 the right electric strike?
No. The HES 9700 is built specifically around the square bolt geometry of Corbin Russwin SecureBolt and Yale SquareBolt exit devices. For a conventional rim panic exit device with a Pullman latch, the Trine 4850 is the surface mounted electric strike made for rim panic exit devices. Confirm the bolt type at the device before ordering, since the two families are not interchangeable even though both mount on the frame surface.
6) Which surface mounted electric strike should I use on an exterior door in a hurricane code jurisdiction?
The HES 9700 is the one carrying the exterior and windstorm credentials: it is outdoor rated, UL 1034 burglary resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, UL listed to ANSI 250.13 Severe Windstorm, and Florida Building Code approved under FL#14307, with a stainless steel housing and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. 7) What is the difference between the HES 9700 and the Trine 4801 electric strike for SecureBolt and SquareBolt exit devices?
Both are surface mounted electric strikes built for Corbin Russwin SecureBolt and Yale SquareBolt square bolt exit devices, and both use a 9 inch by 1-3/4 inch surface profile. The deciding difference is fire rating: the HES 9700 is fire rated and conforms to CAN4-S104, NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door requirements, is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hours in fail secure, and is also windstorm rated to ANSI 250.13. The Trine 4801 is not fire rated.
